Hi everyone, recently I’ve been looking after trading my car in and getting an Audi A3. The one I’ve found that I’m thinking of getting is a 2009 1.9 TDI with 97000 miles on the clock

Had a little test drive of it today and noticed the following issues, firstly I noticed there was quite a considerable oil leak on the front of the engine (not too worried about that as the oil level was okay and that is quite common for a 12 year old diesel?) when driving it I noticed under acceleration there was quite a lot of white smoke. I the noticed it was smoking whilst driving at a constant speed and revving it whilst stationary. After looking under the bonnet I noticed what at first I thought was an egr delete turns out at some point someone has bypassed the egr but left it on. I have never owned a diesel before and I’m not 100% sure if I’m overreacting with the amount of smoke or if that’s just something that’s usual for these to do?

I am currently an apprentice Hgv mechanic so some things I have a good knowledge on and others not so much. The car is coming into work tomorrow so I can inspect it underneath before purchase. I will ask the experienced mechanics what they think but wanting to hear any of your suggestions also please.

    Many thanks, Josh

    Hi Josh,
Bit of a late reply. If the EGR is blanked there is presumably an issue. If it is noticed I think it is also an MOT fail. Walk away, there are plenty of others (unless the price is very good and you can do all the work yourself)
