So around three years ago I bought my A6 C6 (MMI 2G ) with a faulty CD player. I did not realise at that time that there is a draconian phenomena called "Component Protection". I bought a used CD player and replaced it. CD Tracks would skip every 2 secs, which obviously meant CP is active. I live in Dublin and found out, it will take an extra €150 to remove the CP. I gave zero fu*ks and decided to live without a CD player in my car.

Now that itch has resurfaced again. I recently fixed my old CD player, plugged it in the car, and the Component Protection is still active. If I remove the fault via vcds, it reappears again. This situation paves the way for either of the following possibility:

1- The old broken CD player was also a replaced one and hence when I plug it in, it is still alien to the system.
2- Once CP is active, you are doomed. You have to remove it via dealership/ODIS even if you have plugged the original CD player back in again.

Folks, what could be the case here? Thanks

Component potection can be removed using a third party software/Hardware device FVDI but this is more than the cost of having the dealer do it.

Thanks for the reply. What I have been meaning to understand is: what if after I plug another cd changer, have the CP active and then plug the original CD changer back in? should that get rid of the CP fault?

From my understanding, every time you connect a CP enabled device this changes the CAN gateway settings triggering a CP fault.

You can disconnect a device and reconnect it without getting any CP faults but put another one in its place then a CP fault will trigger.

If you do it too many times a CP fault may trigger with the original items.

Thanks @dan2485. From this forum too, it seems like if you ever get the CP active fault, you have to visit the dealership even if you plug the original component back in. That is so evil and dumb. I might have to boycott audi for this.
Component Protection out of nowhere (last paragraph of first answer)
