Just ran over a large rock on way home from work and smashed oil sump. stopped almost immediately. Any ideas on how complicated to fix and cost?

it is not hard just get another one and put it on, replace the seal around it, long as you have not damaged anything else all should be good, also you have to put new oil in,

Thanks, it's in local garage now and I'm waiting for them to assess damage. If it's going to be costly I'll claim on insurance. I've been told it could be straightforward and fairly cheap to repair. I've also been told as the car is 9 years old it could possibly be a write off depending on damage. That would be a disaster as it's 9 1/2 years old with 90K but I've pampered it and it's like new.

i would be very shocked if it cost you more than £200, as long as there is no other damage. it would not write the car off,

Luckily it appears there was no other damage. So it was just a case of replacing Oil sump.

New sump £79 plus VAT. One hour Labour, plus semi synthetic oil. Total Bill = £139.91. I'm very happy with that as it could have been a lot worse. VW Cardiff quoted same price for sump plus £141 labour charge plus oil. That would have totalled about £250 I expect.

Anyway v6dub, thanks for your responses.

My friend recvently put a steel plate under his.

it's dropped 40mm and the sump is really low. So he put a steel plate on and fixed it in place, it is removable, but it'll take a lot of impact before the sump does.

You can buy skid plates made of aluminium to replace the plastic under trays, the sumps are pretty low on these cars.
