Hi! My Vw golf mk5 gt too 2.0 has been having a random starting problem. Some times It will start fine & other times will turn over fine but not fire up, the weird thing when it doesn’t start is the fan starts going on a turn of the key from cold start. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Kind regards Neil

That symptom suggests the ignition switch is faulty or possibly what is known as the Line 15 relay. The fan controller (in the big fan) is seeing the engine as running but is not receiving the temperature signal so it assumes the engine is overheating and goes into full bore cooling mode, it's very irritating when you are trying to do diagnostics so I full the fuse to shut them up. Firstly, start with a full VAG group specific code read, print and full clear. Then use it again until the problem re-occurs and then get another code read done, then you can look at the two scans and compare what has happened.

Thank you for the reply Crasher, Much appreciated! I shall follow these leads. Could it also be pointing to a problem with the ECU? I’ve previously had Stop car coming not so long ago for break fluid low but fluid was totally topped up & this never happened again. I had a windscreen fitted 6 months ago & I think it was so badly done that water is getting down to the ECU. I seem to have all thes problems since this new windscreen.

    Kind regards Neil

The BAD is an FSI petrol engine, do you mean BKD? If so, the line 15 relay is on the central electrics front face at position KL15 position with the “control group” number 460 printed on top, VAG part number 1K0 951 253 A BUT it could also be the relay power or command feeds at fault. Bridging the 30/85 sockets on the board mimics the relays output function.

Hi Crassher! Thanks again for all your help. Still lost on this car with intermittent starting. We have now changed ignition switch, engine bay relays & battery with no changes. When car doesn’t start there is no glow plug light & engine light on dash & ESP light stays on. Weird thing is rear heated window only works when these lights are on & will start. Checked all wiring & earths. Totally lost now what else to check or is it looking like the ECU has gone? Code we are getting is 18009. I also do not have a relay in this position KL15. It’s the BDK engine. Any other ideas what to look for would be so much appreciated.
