Can you please check my diagnostic thinking on this one?

Driver window suddenly stops working. Also does not move automatically when I open and close door (as it should). All other windows operate fine from driver's armrest control switches. All fuses OK.

So....it's probably not a wiring problem in the loom going through the grommet at the door hinge, since problem only affects drivers' window. In any case, I cant see any obvious issues there.

Probably not the rocker switch since the window is not doing its automatic movement.

So I remove trim to expose the motor. No visible problems with any of wiring connections to it. Remove motor and check free movement of window up and down. It's perfect, no corrosion and all moves smoothly.

So I convince myself that it must be the motor. I buy a used replacement from eBay. Very excited when it arrives. Fit it and .....nothing happens.

I'm back to square 1. What have I missed? Thanks for any help.

Hi buddy, sorry to p on your chips seeing as you have been struggling and spending, but having had the same issue with my b6 cabby on the drivers door , I would lay a pound to a pinch of ---- that this is a problem with one of the many wires passing through the grommet between the A pillar and door.
I cant remember how many wires are in there but lets say a dozen, thin wires and quite thick wires all flexing constantly over the years of open/close of the door, some of the wires will break but not be instantly visible.
Sometimes you lose window function/central lock on the one door/small speaker atop the door card/mirror movement, sometimes all of these and sometimes one or more.
I carried out repairs on mine for different issues over the years, now you could go in and inspect and repair the particular wire/wires affected or look for a new loom, a bit fiddly but rewarding once the desired affect is realised

    Good luck

Thanks Stuart. Well, looks like it's time to start doing a bit of probing to see if there is any obvious break. That will keep me out of mischief for a while.
Any other theories are most welcome.
    Best wishes, and thanks again,
    Steve

You need to do a diagnostic scan of the convenience system and drivers door electrics. You also need to make sure the coding in the new door controller (the motor) is the same as the old one.

Thanks for that. The car is in independent repair shop today for other reasons (broken front coil, which I didn't fancy attempting), so have asked them for a scan and any advice.
The used motor I got on eBay looks identical in all respects to original, but I may change back to eliminate that concern, especially as my original one looks a lot smarter! :-)
    Thx
