i have removed the trim from inside of the tailgate, locks appear to be moving correctly. removed the 2x13mm nuts holding the lock mechanism and pried it off the panel but the tailgate is still stubbbornly shut. Have tried prying it as forcibly as possible without causing damage from the outside but it still wont move. Anyone have some advice please?

Have you tried to open it with the key. I had this on my c5 and that worked for me. Bit of a long shot but worth a try.
