I have a 99 (T Plate) B5 Auto/tip Estate, which had its bulkhead filled to the brim with water (it was so deep I had to fit water wings to me battery!!!!)

Anyway I cleaned out the drain holes & Super!! no more water but.......................... I now have an "Engine" smell in the cabin (But only if I'm standing still ) ie if I stop at lights its worse when I accellerate away from a stop .............

There are deffo no holes in the exhaust or things of that nature ....& it does not smell at all if I lift the bonnett & shuv me nose in there

Its sorta a "Warm" enginey <<<Is that a "real" word!!!! Smell with a fiant odour of exhaust fumes......
I've bin trying to think just HOW to describe it Its like the smell you get if you take the oil filler cap off & sniff the engine

^^^^^^^^^^ THAT makes me sound like a pervert!!!

    Any bright ideas guys ????????????????????????

Jump under and check for exhaust leak which would explain the smell only when ur stopped the fumes rise up into the car also check for oil leaking down the exhaust downpipe this really pongs when it gets hot.

You probably have some mould growth in the air box due to water getting into the heater unit; try an A/C disinfectant kit such as that available from Halfords. I would also recommend you change the pollen filter.

When you cleaned out the plenum chamber, did you remove and discard the rubber grommets? If you did this leaves quite a large hole for engine smells to enter the plenum and hence the pollen filter. When on the move any engine smells are removed due to the airflow through the radiator and belly pan intakes. When you stop, the airflow stops.

    Best,
    Frank

Tesco -> Dettol Antibac Spray Can -> Open all vents -> Put recycle on -> Fan on full -> open window enough to get can and hand in -> Strart Car -> Spray the whole can in -> Shut window and leave for 15 minutes to do it's stuff.

    New Pollen filter.

If your 'recirc' no longer works (does anyone's?) just remove the pollen filter and spray in there with the fans on medium and the windows ajar.
