    Thanks, that'd be much appreciated.
Changed out the oil sensor for a genuine Hella sensor, sensor fault came straight on as with previous OEM one. Thinking it's a wiring issue (though, can't rule out likelihood of two bad sensors). Would like to jump / run a ground / +v feed to verift if signal is getting to where it needs to.

Well, I've located the central pin as ground, the one side as +12v feed and the other as the signal return.

Testing done this morning on the connector (going into the car):
    1) Pin 2 (middle pin) has ground (jumped to a separate ground just to be sure).
    2) +12v is there on the purple wire (pin 1)
    3) Jumped pin 1 and 3 together (3 sends the signal to the control module / ECU).

Closed the bonnet (car shows when the bonnet is open and closed, so the switch connection there is working).
Started the car and.... instantly get "Oil Level! Sensor defective" on FIS, along with the amber warning sign.
This is nuts... Two sensors, both Hella OEM, FIS showing fault. Wiring tested as ok. Wiring jumped, still error.
Scan shows P019600 (roughly from memory).
    Any ideas?

Oil sensor faults seem to be a common issue having spent hours looking through the web, but not seeing any fix success stories.
Just for the hell of it, checked all the fuses on drivers side dash, all intact.

Has the light ever been off, and if so what part number was fitted then (presumably before it failed)?

Totally beyond my knowledge of what the difference is, but the PR codes (they'll be on the sticker in the boot / service book) TM4 and TD1 seem to require sensors 04L907660A
    and 07P907660 respectively.

Assuming you have a CGLC or CMGB code engine, this is the diagram and I have emailed the full engine diagram. Have you checked fuse 2 in the plenum chamber box?

Thanks for the help guys. To answer the questions that have come up:

"Has the light ever been off"
    - Yes, it was always off and was able to use MMI to check oil level. The sensor fault message first came on about 1.5 years ago and decided to never leave... History is: One previous owner (from new), had the car for 3 years, full Audi Service History. Checking through the history, the only warranty fix was a boot latch (from memory). Everything else has been regular service. I've had the car for 3 years since the first owner (slight overlap so I had about 2 months manufacturers warranty left), serviced at Audi, had the water pump and cambelt done with Audi 2 years ago. The light randomly came on around May 2018 (after 2 years of my ownership) and has persisted since. Every start up it comes on and stays on the entire time the car is on.

"and if so what part number was fitted then (presumably before it failed)?"
    -
Part number fitted (until a few days ago) was: 6PR 010 418 -06. 04L 907 660A Hella, AEZ, Made in Germany, PA 66 GF 35. Has the VW Audi logo ont he top left. This along with seeing the history leads me to believe it's the factory fitted sensor (though, there's no way to be 100%). The first time I changed the sensor was a few days ago and I believe that the sensor has been there since the factory fitted it.

"Totally beyond my knowledge of what the difference is, but the PR codes (they'll be on the sticker in the boot / service book) TM4 and TD1 seem to require sensors 04L907660A
    and 07P907660 respectively. "
    -
I will double check the book and find the boot sticker in the morning. TM4 sounds like a familiar number. 04L 907 660A is the oil sensor that was in there, and worked fine for 2 years under my ownership (and assuming as it appears factory, before then too) until 1.5 years ago (was able to check oil level in MMI too, before fault came up). Contacted Hella as 04L 907 660A wasn't listed anywhere, they said it had been superceded and new part number is 04L 907 660B.

"Assuming you have a CGLC or CMGB code engine"
Correct - from memory it's CGLC. When I check the book and boot tomorrow I'll confirm this and TM4.

"this is the diagram and I have emailed the full engine diagram. "
The diagram is really helpful, thanks.
I can confirm I have purple w/black at terminal 1 - this has +12v when tested.
Brown is at Terminal 2 and has ground to chassis (tested). Ran a 2nd temporary ground to this wire just in case.
Yellow w/unknown stripe is at terminal 3 and has no voltage with plug disconnected, makes sense as it's the return wire.
Jumped terminal 1 to terminal 3, confirmed as having 12v across both terminals. Closed bonnet (to ensure it saw "an oil change"), ignition on, warning light immediately came upwith wire jumped.Opened bonnet, plugged connector into sensor, waited about 10 minutes, closed bonnet, ignition on... instant warning light again.

Have you checked fuse 2 in the plenum chamber box?
I have not - I've checked the drivers side (with three rows, A, B, C) and went through every fuse and tested each for continuity (above doing a visual check). All fuses there ok.
Haven't check passenger side dash fuse. Haven't check boot fuses. Haven't checked plenum chamber box - I don't know where this is - assuming somewhere under the bonnet? Did have a quick look in the morning to see if there were any fuses under the bonnet and while admittedly not a thorough check, more of a glance, couldn't see a fuse box. Where would this normal sit, if in the engine compartment? Hope the info so far is helping, thanks again for the replies, there's a certain comfort in knowing a battle isn't being fought alone.

Since it is a level and temp sender and not a simple high / low switch (based on Crasher's diagram) I wonder how happy it and the ECU would be to have 12V applied . To send both it is presumably mixing two signals on a time division or other mechanism.

I assume you're trying to find the connection to the ECU to see if it has corrosion or a lost connection. VCDS could never see the aux heater on our car. Once I found the corroded and snapped 12V feed in it's connector it was obvious why .

    Please read here: https://www.hella.com/municipal/asse...s_HELLA_EN.pdf

sensor sends a pulse to the ecu which I suspect is a fixed frequency but has a varying duty cycle which transmits the data back to the CPU. Assuming the output is 12V shorting the wire back to the ecu won’t help as it will probably interpret as a faulty sensor. Does it read the oil temperature ok?

is the replacement part from Audi as there are a lot of posts where only Audi sensors work after exchange.
