    Hi,
With my recent troubles with my 2000 AJM golf mk4 115hp PD I'm thinking of purchasing some scanning kit. I also have a 2014 Passat b7 140hp bluemotion. I've been looking at the Rosstech VCDS (3 vin or 10 vin), is there any others to consider? Plus being a noob at this stuff am I going to be able to do anything with it without any sort if training?
    Many thanks.

You could go for an older version like the Hex Can but if you get a new car you would need to change. Check out the Ross Tech site to see what is possible. It is all pretty straightforward just scan the car first and save that in case you change something and want to change it back later. The other thing it can do is release the rear electronic brake on the passat so you could change the rears yourself. This alone has paid for the cable for me.

Depends what you want to do. I used mine initially to set a few convenience options like key opening door without sounding alarm, etc then trying to understand where various faults were coming from. It was useful for telling me the G65 sensor was bust on air conditioning and that aux heater had a problem that I quickly tracked to damaged power connection, but after two or three years of intermittent attempts to fix an "insufficient flow" on EGR I'm still not there. However, I can easily reset the indicator periodicallyto see if it is now fixed. Very useful when an MOT is due .
