I've just bought a 2002 Golf GT TDI.

There is a fault with the Temperature Guage on the dash. It doesn't move from its position on the far left no matter how hot the car gets.

My question is, I have VAGCOM and the lead what will I need to look at to check to see of the Engine temperature sensor is at fault?

Also, where is the temperature sensor on the Mk4?

Yes, you can go into the measuring blocks to view the engine water temp with vagcom.

The temp sender failing is a very very common problem and it is located in a housing on the top hose near the engine block. Quite difficult to spot, but it is there.

    Thanks for that.

Does the plastic engine cover need to be removed?

OK, I've run VAGCOM and the only fault that I can find is :

    Control Module Part Number: 1J0 920 926 C
    Component and/or Version: KOMBI+WEGFAHRS. RB8 V24
    Software Coding: 05414
    Work Shop Code: WSC 00046
    Additional Info: WVWZZZ1 VWZ6Z0
    1 Fault Found:
    01039 - Coolant Temperature Sensor (G2)
    30-10 - Open or Short to B+ - Intermittent

Though when I view the collant temperature in Vagcom it climbs up as would be expected????

ok, as you look at that picture, directly underneath the air hose, where it enters the engine, you will find your coolant temp sensor tucked away under there, its quite small and you'll need a light to properly see it.

if you plan on changing it, make sure the engine's cool first... or you're going to have burnt fingers and make sure you have some coolant to replace any thats lost

in regards to the reading from vagcom, these tend to be an intermittent fault so chances are when you vagcomed it, it was functioning properly.... if your having trouble with the dash readout, its %99 certain the part's faulty.

Sorry, I really am thick! If the air hose is the metal one that runs from the airbox on the right hand side to the engine it enters right down the back of the engine. If the sensor was there I would need a ramp to get to it from the underside.

I'm sure Im looking in the wrong place.

Can you direct me from the oiler filler cap or the dip stick (not me!) or expansion tank?

It is different on the AFN engine.

    From your picture...

    Oil filler cap.

    Go 6"'s to the right

Then down, that is the top hose, the sensor is on the bottom of it.

It is secured by a simple 'C' clip.

Pull the clip, then pull the sensor out. Disconnect the wiring plug after it is out of the hose as it will be easier.

When you put the new one in, make sure the rubber 'o' ring from the old isn't still inside the hose.

Thanks for that. I'll have a look tomorrow.

Had a bit more faith that it's a faulty sensor when the gauge flew back into action for about 5 minutes tonight.

I take it I just need to match the sensor by the colour? Seems from reading other posts that's how it's done.

Off to local VW dealer tomorrow.....

    Cheers
