    Hello people,

I need some advice with replacing my thermostat on my VW Scirocco 2.0l tdi cr 170.
I have purchased all parts from TPS, although I seem to have missed the O Ring seal on the tube situated on the block that the thermostat pushes into.

    My issue is this:

How do I unbolt the small multi spline bolt that holds the plastic pipe which goes into the thermostat?
This single multi spline bolt is tucked behind the oil filter canister.
There is not enough room for a 1/4” bit and flexible joint to fit.

One option I am going to try and do is to remove the spline socket but from 1/4” holder, and glue it onto a 1/4” spanner.
It looks necessary to bend the spanner to allow for access to hopefully undo the bolt.

This is going to be mega fiddle and time consuming but potentially my only option.

Can anybody please advise me on the thermostat replacement procedures.

    I have so far:

    Drained Antifreeze
    Removed inlet pipe to throttle.
Removed Throttle & EGR Valve (cleaned carbon deposits on both)
Removed all hoses onto the thermostat (but not the plastic pipe on block).
Removed the thermostat fixing bolts (lower was challenging but cut down an Allen Key to get undone)
Removed both dipstick bolts to allow for room ( I’ve not been able to remove dipstick so leaving well alone)

I understand that the plastic pipe on block (with the awkward spline bolt behind oil canister) needs to be able to move to allow access to remove thermostat as it’s tight up against alternator.

I’ll order new O Ring for plastic pipe to thermostat on Monday.

I have already got new from TPS:
    Thermostat, seal & fixings
    3 bottles of antifreeze
Orange seal between throttle & EGR

The Black D Shaped seal between EGR to inlet looks in good shape as does the EGR side pipe seal.
Which is a good job as my local TPS could not find the Black D seal and supplied the wrong EGR side pipe seal.
I’ll see if I can re order the correct ones Monday as well.

Please any help will be much appreciated as I need my car back on the road.

    Thanks

So friends got the pesky splines bolt out of the black pipe.
But alas it doesn’t give enough room to get the thermostat clear from the black pipe on the block!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
