10 months old, 10k miles. When towing our small caravan I'm getting 35mpg, which I am quite happy with. However when not towing I only seem to be getting around 45mpg. In the specs for this car a combined mpg is quoted as 61.4mpg - quite a large difference to what I am actually getting. Any advice or comments appreciated.

Hard to say as a lot depends on the type of trips and driving style. It's a big car and I would think 50mpg would be good.
Current- A6 C8 40 tdi quattro s line Daytona Grey
    Gone-S3 sportback, A6 C7 biturbo saloon,A4 B 8.5 avant, A6 C6 3.0 tdi Quattro saloon, A6 C5 2.8 Q Avant

My 66 plate hatch 2.0 tdi 110kw 150hp manual has a long term mpg (113k miles) of 37mpg; since i got it about 109k miles mpg varies from 35-45mpg; at pump measured method of mpg returns 42-44mpg on average over a fuel tank (measured over 4000 miles covered).

The best i got from a go and return trip was 53mpg cruise control on set a 65mph, at night, empty motorway and was 55miles one way so total of 110...boot was empty (only the spare and jack and whatever is next to it) i was alone in the car and the tank was under half...

I noticed that 70kg in the boot makes it to lower about 20mm at the rear arches... as rear suspension and springs is very soft... and at this point mpg drops dramatically; i tested this over a 40 miles distance that took 35 minutes... same roads same traffic condition same speeds, and the extra weight and back slightly lower affects mpg by a lot... the only instance i get 35mpg... (i use this route very often- this was not registered as one off; results are consistent)

If the same weight i move it between the front seats and rears... all car drops by 10 mm and mpg is in low 40... without the weight and almost a full tank i get 45mpg...

The weight is affecting in my case mpg but not as dramatic as the ride height of the rear... handling is affected when the back drops also fills more unstable...

Note: my one is Business SE trim so no sports suspension or self levelling or dcc. I do not have a tow hitch and one was never installed. I personally find the mpg disgusting on this engine, considering the car is 1300kg... and i had others heavier old cars achieving far better mpg, probably The only negative point i have towards this car next to the fact that if you have a full tank and you put the weekly shopping in the boot you look like you are on a airport runway and ask confirmation to take off... but i think i can change this by replacing rear springs with some heavy duty ones or if not available... with helper springs or air helper springs like Firestone coil-rite 4176...
