I have a similar problem and am currently investigating. Symptoms of mine are slightly different in that lights will be okay for a long time but then randomly go out totally when switching from dipped to main or vice versa. Lights only out for a second or less but obviosuly this is a potentially dangerous fault. Also, I can't flash the lights unless I really yank on the column stalk. This would suggest a broken / worn column stalk to me but there are other possibilities such as a dodgy relay in the headlight circuit. Waiting for my electrician mate to pop round with his voltmeter before I diagnose properly.

    Will keep you posted.

    Heloo to all ,

hey guys did any of you get the problem resolved,, i have exactly the same problem with my 99 A4 1.8se,

when it happens, if i gently but firmly push the high bean stalk even further forward it comes baack to life so i suspect it is worn contacts in the stalk

anyone any idea how much the replacement might be also would the same stalk from similar year A3 fit

    cheers daz
