I am not going to be able to help here so much as try and suggest some logic that the tech-savvy contributors might be able to work with...

Sounds like it is over-fuelling enough to trigger the test readings but in such a way as it is not throwing up fault codes... The key here, to me, is that the car seems to think it is all ok doing that...

I have no idea how complex the engine management is on these cars is, but some use over-fuelling on some cycles to control temperatures... So, my question for the tech savvy would be something like "could this be a faulty temp sender sending erroneous info to the brain that is then causing over-fuelling in a manner that does not cause the car to otherwise think anything is wrong.."...

But then, it would know something was wrong, wouldn't it...

I am fascinated to hear how this resolves...

It is an extremely complex system that monitors itself to a higher level than any MOT test 4 gas, something only full suite of Horiba systems could do better.

Well it has been fixed. It was the Pre-Cat Lambda Sensor, simple. A new one and all results were in limits.

    But the plot thickens.

So I am drawn to your statement above. I do not dispute it but wonder what has happened. My understanding is that the Pre-Cat Lambda sends data to the ECU and has a feedback loop to adjust the settings. The Post-Cat Lambda only monitors and throws up a light if it senses a problem. So are/were both Lambda sensors broken? If the Post-Cat sensor doesn't know it is broken, how will it trigger a light when the Pre-Cat Lambda fails and emissions go haywire. I asked my mechanic and he didn't think it likely. However if, as you state, it is more sensitive than the MOT then surely at CO of 1.02% (limit 0.20) at fast idle and 1.57% (limit 0.3) at idle would have thrown a few lights or codes, no? If it isn't working I don't suppose it matters just now. Or does it? How will I know?

    Intriguing.

It still doesn’t make sense, the post cat sensor monitors what is going on AND applies corrections where necessary. I will see if I can find the engines Self Study Program published by VAG for training on all new systems.

It passed the re-test without an issue. Other than almost £500 diagnostic and lambda bill. I still do not understand why there were no codes and no lights. Both my mechanic and the admittedly totally useless chap at VW stated that the post cat sensor cannot apply corrections. I dunno! I googled the SSP 511 but it only came up in German and French. I'm not fluent enough in French tech speak to churn my way through that.

Both say that without a light or a code they do not think the post cat sensor has failed. When I pointed out the pre-cat sensor didn't throw any lights or codes they shrugged and said that it is within limits now so must be working. But it can't apply corrections so how would a failure manifest itself Confused? I am!!

Is there any way of (cheaply) testing the warning circuits?

Despite me saying it ran fine, we have noticed an instant circa 10% improvement in fuel consumption according to the OBC. So this has probably been failed for some months.

There are no warning circuits as such, it is digital CAN data. Were did you come up with the SSP 511 reference?

I have SSP511 but SSP510 would be more pertinent but neither cover what you are interested in, it is more of an overall how the Bosch Motronic MED 17.5.21 system works that you want, I will have a dig and email you 510 and 511.

A few weeks have passed and it's time to bring this to a close. I have searched the forum for a thread on garages or Main ******** but to no avail. My car is fine but will NEVER BE RETURNING TO CAFFYNS VW WORTHING. To say they are useless is wrong, they were worse than useless. I have persevered with them for 3 years only because I had a service plan. This final episode has forced me to cancel that plan and look for a new garage.

To sum up their achievements so far:

Service Jan 2017 a DSG gearbox software update caused ridiculous hesitation. They told us it was normal. For 4 months we persevered and finally with the help of VW UK it went to Coopers of Chichester for a 2nd opinion. 2 hours later and a full tolerance reset, it was returned to us working very well. Why Caffyns couldn't do this is still a mystery.

MOT May 2018. Amber warnings for 4 tyres at ONLY 4.5-5.0mm and a quote for £482 on the form for Avon mid-market tyres. I queried this with regard to AUC limits and the rabbit in the headlights look from the "service secretary" who has probably less than zero tech knowledge was hilarious.

MOT May 2019. Fail for emissions and immediately the secretary queried the cam belt replacement for no other reason than their technicians hadn't done it. £100+VAT to plug in their VAG.com and they fail to diagnose a fault. Offer to start changing parts only after they want to charge me 3 hours labour to check the cam-belt that according to the secretary "might be less than a tooth out What?? Naturally they then wanted to start with the Catalytic converter despite no evidence this wasn't working. But it was the most expensive part! Chuckle of embarrassment from secretary. Red warnings now for 2 tyres with 3-4mm and a quote for 2 more ditchfinders. Rears still 4.5mm but somehow no amber this year. The AUC question was again broached. Pointless. Next I was told that driving the car would now be illegal due to it emitting excess Carbon Dioxide. He insisted it wasn't Carbon Monoxide the clever chap!! DVLA seemed to indicate it would be legal until the current MOT expired, as did my local garage and another local friendly mechanic. I call this scare tactics. Underhand even.

So I get it fixed elsewhere quite easily. I book it in for a re-test. I query that it has to be within 10 working days. The "wonderful" secretary who call himself a service specialist says it is fine as we had a bank holiday. Sure as s**t smells I turn up to be told I'm outside the 10 days and must pay for a full re-test. Now if I were not so despairing I may have turned to violence but give the secretary his due, he asked his boss to waive the fee but then spoilt it by saying it was a good-will gesture

Rant over and thanks to Crasher for all your help.

    Nick

Hi, I’ve had the same problem with 2016 Audi A3 it won’t pass the CO emissions test, what exactly did you replace that fixed this? Just the pre-cat lambda sensor?

Yep just the sensor. no warnings and it ran fine if a little thirsty. £164.20 +VAT but aftermarket ones are half that. Fitting took less than 5 minutes. I'd try that before paying hundreds in unknown diagnostics.
