Steering fault

Has anyone experience the following fault come up on dash?

Steering:
System fault
You can continue to drive

Steering has got slightly harder. Park assist won’t work. Rear camera and parking sensors are working fine.

Fault came up after trying to sort problem with tow bar electrics install.

Any thoughts? It’s going into Audi tomorrow to have the car recoded for the tow bar install. Thought I would ask on here first before they try and tell me my steering rack is knackered. It happened while sat on my driveway.

Steering rack may need replacement unfortunately. If it's out of warranty, it could be around 2k....

Doesn’t just break sat on the driveway and only 40k miles. If so Audi had better be ready

+1 on that! I was also assuming since the CAN stopped communicating, all sorts of fault codes will be present in most modules. Some will auto clear if enough clear driving cycles are performed, and some need VAS 5051 or VCDS to clear the codes first.
You may find that turning the steering from lock to lock a few times and driving it may clear things, I'm not sure if this type of steering needs adapting or not?

Very unlikely the rack has just broken.

Well that’s how I see it too. It’s at Audi now so we shall see what they come up with. Hopefully their technicians can work the problem and figure it out.

Back to good old faithful. 2009 Mondeo with 200k on the clock! (With a p f Jones towbar and wiring kit I fitted in 2011 that still works just fine!) lol

Update from Bath Audi. All recoded and steering back to normal. Top service. CAN got a bit scrabbled by the sound of it but they’ve sorted it.
