There was a recall on some A6's about water getting into the passenger footwell via some sort of plate behind the battery. After driving in the rain, check if you have water under the carpets in the passenger footwell. There is some sort of electronic control system there which controls many of the electrical systems the car has, and when that gets wet it does all sorts of crazy things.

The fault here is the plenum chamber - as I found out recently. (A void between the engine bay and the windscreen where the battery sits). There is a drain hole under the battery which can get blocked causing a build up of water.

    OR

Water ingress from a faulty seal around the pollen filter.

Both of which cause water to run into the car, behind the carpet in the passenger side footwell.

Audi have placed an electronic control unit here, under the carpet, which looks after electric windows, alarm, centrtal locking, etc. If this gets wet, you may condsider hiring an exorcist as all sots of strange things start to happen.

You can get a fault read out and it can pinpoint what has activated the alarm

Similar kind of thing started on mine- but only in the cold. The alarm started sounding in cold weather overnight around Christmas. Whenever I checked all seemed OK. After reading the advice on these forums I changed my main battery - it had run flat once recently so no probs.
Then over this last weekend the temperature dropped to -2C in the campsite I was sleeping at in the Lakes and the damn thing went off again. I wasn't too popular there! Had to leave the car unlocked all night.

I just spoke to Swindon Audi who said that the problem wasn't likely to be the battery backup in the siren because if that battery had issues it would sound the (beep beep) siren but not flash the hazards. My hazards are flashing when it goes off.
I plugged my shareware version of VAGCOM into it yesterday and it said alarm triggered twice - once by front left door and once by rear right door. Swindon Audi said this didn't sound right and was there water near the convenience unit? There isn't - I'm aware of that one.
Their advice was to either let it develop, give it them anyway ((watch the weather forcast for cold weather ??) not happy to do at 75 quid plus VAT an hour) or to use VAGCOM to tell the car there is no alarm.
    Any thoughts ?

Hi You know what has activated the alarm, which is an advantage. There is possibily water in the door locks.Look on the bright side though,i think we have waved goodbye to the minus degrees,(for the time being)

    Hey Kenney,
I hope you're right about the goodbyes but it just puts the problem off by 6 months, until autumn comes round again. Wouldn't water cause problems whether it was cold or not ? Was dry as a bone on saturday when it went of that evening ...

There are 4 micro switches in the door lock, the only explanation i can give you is,water expands, when it freezes, causing one of the switches to make a contact.
