    Hi,

I just purchased a VW Golf Diesel TDI 2010 a couple of days ago, and the engine management light starts flashing after I maintain 70mph for a couple of minutes. Like you said, there also seems to be a slight drop in power, but after I turn the engine off/on things are all okay for a while.
Did you manage to find a solution for this?
I'm assuming that a sensor might be bust as the car drives perfectly other than this.

    Thanks

    Jude

This is an old post. The usual cause of this is turbo failure, we are just doing one on the exact same car today; it is probaly why the car was sold... ohh and I have just heard from the turbo people the turbine shaft had snapped. We also sent the DPF to DPF Clean team and they just rang to say the DPF was blocked.

I hate it when people do that. Please tell me you bought it from a trader?

A scan will confirm but as crasher says your looking at a p0299 or p0234 fault code which nearly always means a new turbo.

The thing is though, why is it legal for an individual to sell a car with a known but hidden and intermittent fault when to do this as a car trader is an offence? Not only that, but if it did come from a dealer and they did not know, why is it again legal for an individual to shaft a dealer? If it was an offence for anyone to sell a car with a known fault to anyone, trade or retail, then there would be a lot less of this.

I totally agree. Although the issue would be if the person knew and proving that would be nearly impossible.

There’s a tiny possibility in this case the seller didn’t know about the limp mode. Driving style is a big thing. If you drive slow then the early sign of veins sticking on a turbo would not as be noticeable as if you drove hard everywhere.

It will become easier with fault code time stamping.

I still don’t understand why the Vw mk5 golf under/over boost creates a (potentially dangerous) no warning light limp mode loss of power situation. It’s the only limp mode fault I can think of that doesn’t put a warning light on the dash. That could mean someone could deny knowledge under a time stamp fault situation.

Because it isn't an emissions fault or one that (in my opinion incorrectly) is deemed as dangerous. The aspect of this I don't understand is why underboost causes limp mode, i.e. even lower boost; nonsensical.
