Today I have lost the ability to lock/unlock via the central locking on the drivers
door on my 2001 polo, I can lock all doors from the passenger side so the
    central locking pump is fine

I am guessing it could be a broken cable/cables that run from the door
to the main car, because the the electric windows switches only half work
and the door lock/unlock button has stopped doing anything, this has all
happened at the same-time by the way

The reason I think it's the cables is, that when it went for a service last year
VW noticed that you couldn't open the windows when the drivers door was opened,

Does anybody have any advice on the possibility of replacing or checking
    the cabling

    Well that was painless enough

Pulled back door rubber cable gator to find a cable
cut in half guess it was a main feed as it was
a thick gauge wire black and white in colour

anyway it must of been botched repaired before
I bought the car as there was a little piece of tape
on one end, looks like they had just twisted the ends
    together

So I got my soldering iron out and joined it back together
then gave it a good layer of PVC tape, hopefully will last a
    while now.

If you're going to have a problem, the ones that are easy to sort are the best
