    2006 Passat Estate - 2.0 TDi Sport 170 BMR

Tuesday this week my car cut out after driving about 50 meters max amd then wouldn’t start. RAC turned up, no codes stored and got it started with a quick spray of easy start. Obviously this is not a good thing to keep using so I wasn’t to get it sorted asap. RAC man said he been to other cars doing the same and didn’t have an answer.

    today it did it again…

does anyone have any experience of this happening to them?

fingers crossed for a quick fix.

    cheers,
    Chris.

A very common reason for this is the crank speed sensor known as the G28 and the ECU does not often register them as a code. They are a total PITA to change and the whole job can snowball horribly to gearbox out and sump off if great care is not taken when removing the 4mm hex head screw that holds it in.

you would need to air on the side of caution on this 1 The wiring on a 06 vehicle suffer from oxidation & when resistance goes up voltage comes down ohms law on this vehicle has 2 fuel fuel relays my first checks would be in tank pump and its wiring

Yes as @mickeybo says this could be a problem outside the ability of the EMS to be able to pick up, the BMR has no fuel pressure monitoring and the early (your is very early) 3C was prone to lift pump failure and injector problems which were the cause of a recall but the problem is coming back with the upgraded parts. Deeper diagnostics is required going further than simply barking at fault codes (or none) is not enough… proper in depth diagnostics.

Occasionally the top rear loom (turbo actuator, dpf pressure sensor and EGT sensor) on a BMR drops onto the turbo heat shield and can cause sporadic cutting out of the engine when the loom conduit melts and the wires inside short. I know of at least 3 BMR engines where this has happened.

Oddly on mine the fault recorded was a bad G28 which it was not and a total Red Herring as the ECU was not able to interpret signals received.

Thanks for the input everyone, I’ll keep you posted on the outcome as and when. The car is in the garage being diagnosed as we speak.

    Still no codes via VAGCOM.

i seem to have a habit of picking out the troublesome vw’s (only good one was a new one) even though I spent ages searching for this one. It was a two owner car with full history and the guy I bought it from had owned it for the last 12 years. In the last 3 years he’d only covered 5000 miles as it wasn’t his main car anymore. Anyway here we are, I work 22 miles from home and I don’t have a working car. I might have to go back leasing after trying to get away from it.
