I have a 98 110tdi with Gamma IV radio / cassette head unit (ref 3 B0 035 186A) which includes a cd control but without the changer. Purchased a cd changer (ref 1 J6 035 111) with lead (ref 1 J0 051 592A) on ebay for fitting in boot. The cable, however, has a mini ISO connector (blue) which doesn't match the connection on the back of the head unit - probably because the car is one of the last before the late 98 facelift? Therefore purchased an adaptor lead (ref 1 J0 051 445B) from dealer.
I've checked the changer in a more recent Passat and it works OK, but not in mine which is hardly surprising as there's no continuity of some of the wiring and the wiring colour codes don't match?
Anyone out there encountered / solved the same problem?

Who is the Gamma IV made by? Is it a Philips one? If it is you are correct, I don't think the 2 bits are compatible...

Normally the blue mini ISO plug fits in the r/h side of the top connector as you look at the back of the radio. If your unit only has a 10 pin connection at the top, you're going to struggle....

I had the same problem and had to replace the head unit with a newer version (£30 off Ebay), some of the permanent live wires (Red I think, long time ago now) had to be jumped across the connector to ensure a permanent feed to the new head unit otherwise it wouldn't switch on. Local car radio shop (not Halfords) identified the wire for me and told me it was a common problem.

Froggy / PerArdua - thanks for replies.
The head unit is a Philips one which has the 10 pin connector at the top, hence the adaptor lead which the dealer will not take it back as the polythene bag has been opened.
I was hoping that re-jigging the wiring would work but from PerAdua's experience apparently not. So it's either an updated head unit from ebay or just put up with cassettes!

Apologies for late response, but Froggy's already answered the query - my car has the head unit shown in grhdylan's post.
As I've not been able to get it to work in my car, it's going into my sister- in - law's Passat once I get some spare time!
