This came on the other day at start up and would only clear with the OBD tester, everything was ok for 2 days now the fault is back at startup. Car is running as expected with no lumpy running etc? Am I right in thinking this is fault on no.3 glow plug? Is this a common fault on these engines (A6 2.0tdi Ultra 190bhp) I’ve read it could be either the glow plug, wiring loom or Control module, anyone got any advice or indeed DIY methods for fixing this? The car is a 2014 with 56000 miles on the clock.
    Cheers in advance.

Number 3 is a special pressure sensing plug and these are failing like mad at the moment and cost about £90 instead of the usual £15, we have gone from none to dozens in a few months but fit four new plugs anyway. The longer they are dead the harder it is to get them out, I did a set last week on a proper Blue Motion Golf 7 and two were so tight I was getting very worried, the screeching nosies 1 and 4 were made as I wound them out set the dog off that lives over in the houses behind the workshops! Also they were difficult to get out even when unthreaded as the carbon build up from them not working made it really difficult to extract them. Number 1, 2 and 4 just use the usual deep reach 10mm socket but number 3 needs a deep reach large internal bore 13mm and I had to hunt around in my sockets to find a 12 point with enough space inside to go over the electrical connection. Also take care when removing number 3 electrical connection as it looks easy to was damage. The torque figure for 3 is less than the others, I think it was 15 and 12Nm and the manual strongly warns that even slightly over tightening number 3 will damage it.

Typical mate, thanks for the heads up. What’s the best place to get a set? I see Euro are ‘out of stock’

Try TPS, Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate if you're Tyneside area.

There’s a place just down the road called automotive solutions by Richard Martin who is a VW Audi Specialist, I might just take it to him and get a quote to sort it, especially if they are a nightmare to get out. What ever happened to a standard glow plug with a wire on the end...? Everything is so expensive considering it’s probably made in China for 40p

The pressure sensor is required to optimise the injection strategy to try and meet the ridiculous emissions targets placed on car manufacturers by the EU, all in the name of Co2 reduction but then they found the NOX was a bigger worry and reducing Co2 increases NOX emissions, left and and right hand, knowing what each other is doing?

I was servicing a one year old A4 the other day and when I looked from below I could see its headlight controllers were made in.... China, as were its wheels!

To be fair it’s a lovely car with 190bhp and only £30 a year tax, definitely strange how the emissions are so low but the bhp so high. Like you say it’s probably through little things like this sensor... I must say the MPG is nowhere near what they officially quote, I’m lucky if I’m getting 40s to the gallon unless I’m on a long run.
Car is booked into garage on Tuesday for diagnostics then repair, I’ll let you know how it goes.
    Cheers for the info.

Had the car into automotive solutions today and I must say I was impressed, £138 for the number 3 glow plug with sensor, supply and fit. Also carried out a full VCDS diagnostic, 4 wheel alignment check and a full health check of the car. Would definitely recommend Richy to any Northeast VAG owner.
