    im am about to change my rear shocks whilst keeping the springs, they are coilovers, i dont have a spring compressor.....
    does anyone have advice, and or even better an illustration of this?

    You shouldn't split the suspension without spring compressors its incredibly dangerous and stupid, get down machine mart and buy yourself a pair shouldn't be more than £20, you'd never get it back together without compressors anyway as the springs are under constant compression when on the arm.

    Other than that it should be fairly straight forward depending on the car, haynes manual is usually crammed with such knowledge
    You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future
