    Hi everyone,

I thought I would seek some advice from you guys as I'm facing a very hefty repair bill. I have a 2014 Passat estate 1.6 TDI, which has done just under 40k miles. I bought the car from a VW dealership under the das welt auto scheme when it was 15 months old with approx 18k miles on the clock (so I assumed it was a quality approved car). It has been serviced every year in accordance with the manual by a VW independent specialist.

All seemed to be fine with the car until about 7 weeks ago when the engine completely shut down on me at 50 mph. There were no warnings or anything - and I'd not previously experienced a problem with the car (it had been serviced only a week previously). I'm lucky it didn't end up in a serious accident. The car got recovered to the indy specialist garage and two fault codes were identified: the fuel injectors and the ECU.

The fuel injectors were sent away for testing and the report came back that they were fine. The garage then proceeded to rewire the injectors back to the ECU, which they thought had solved the issue as it got the car to start. However, the engine then shut down again on me when collecting it from the garage on a narrow country road. The car was recovered once more with the same fault codes, so the garage said that it must be the ECU that has failed - although they acknowledged that the ECU does not normally fail on these cars, and they'd not come across this issue in 20 years of specialising in these cars. I asked them to remove the ECU from the car and it was clear that the outer shell was very heavily corroded, so sent it away to a company called ECUtesting.com for expert testing. They replied saying that it was a model of ECU that they couldn't test so sent it straight back.

I then took it up with VW customer service who encouraged me to move the car to a dealership (mentioning the possibility of goodwill) - so i paid to get the car moved. I have then had to pay to have the diagnostics tests repeated again, which has taken over 4 weeks. They have now also said that the injectors are fine, the rewiring work that was done was fine, but the ECU is the fault and needs to be replaced (at a cost of over £1500 plus £180 for the diagnostics). They have also said that the ECU is heavily corroded which seems to be the issue, but also said that there was evidence of the ECU being opened previously (which was news to me) and are now using that to weasel out of any goodwill payment. I said that if it was opened it must have been before I bought the car.

I am now at a loss what to do. I am facing a heft bill of over £2000 to get the car back for a part that I'm told does not normally fail (and should not fail in such a catastrophic way that causes the engine to shut down), and the car is less than 4 years old. The car has also been off the road for nearly 2 months which is driving us to despair and forced us to rearrange our holidays. VW customer care have wiped their hands of it and are now trying to say it's just one of those things and I'm unlucky. The questions I would like to ask are:

    1) Has anyone come across the ECU failing on this mark of car before, particularly one that is still relatively new;
    2) Are there any reasons why the ECU may have been so corroded - e.g. have there been any problems with the plenum chamber on this mark of car; and
    3) What should I do next? I obviously need to get the car back ASAP, but feel really let down by VW here.

Apologies for the long winded nature of this query.

    Kind regards.

Without further costs (taking the vehicle from them) and time it really sounds like they have you by the ECU's.

It sounds like you informed them that you had sent the ECU to someone so they WILL use any excuse to dodge the good will.

Electronics/electrical are strange things, they fail whenever they want.

You could potentially get a second hand ECU from a breaker that matches your car and either have a go fitting it or get your indy to do it.

Still not cheap but cheaper maybe.

Sorry but can't help with the other questions, not noticed any corrosion on mine.

Hi I'm having the exact same problems as you . Car cranks but won't start. It's throwing up error codes but the sensors and stuff are fine. There telling me it needs a new ECU . There is surely no point sending it away to anyone as there are parts of the ECU that are locked and can't be decoded so can't be fixed. £1681inc vat for the new ECU then it needs coded and fitted to the car . What happened with yours in the end? Did you replace the ECU? Any information much appreciated!

    Thanks

Having an ECU tested and repaired is possible but in my experience the results are very poor. On the type 36 Passat we have seen a lot of water damaged ECU’s, when they are removed the casings are in a terrible state.

Thanks for reply crasher. When my ECU was removed it had very little corrosion and the inside looked fine to me. But there must be something wrong with it. I can't actually believe where VW placed the ECU in the Passat. Surely it would have been better in the cabin somewhere. If this is a common problem VW should be footing the bills and this is one expensive fix . And it's there placement of it that is the problem. 😡

Get your main engine control relay checked out this relay covers 6 different components & is grounded by a switched earth at the ecu. Most likely causes wiring or loss of earthing at ecu
