You have an A6 HeadUnit without a video input at MMI level 1110 dated 2004 Week 42

That level of MMI will successfully update using MMI level 5150, which is CD1 of the 3CD set you've acquired. [I've personally updated from 0850 to 5150, so I know no intermediate is required]!

Your comments indicate either a dodgy CD [check it against the light] or that the CD player won't reliably read CDs. Try a cleaning CD [one with brushes] to see if that helps.

Media version - Europa_0690-1994 : tells me you have firmware level 0690 in the navigation unit.
Data Bank - 9D2/20040702095719 : tells me you probably have the 2G High Nav. DVD dated 2005.

Navbox firmware is not updated by the MMI CDs, it's updated off the Navigation DVD. If you change the navigation DVD to one with different firmware, it will reload that different firmware off the DVD. [Note: corrected June29. I previously thought the NavBox firmware wouldn't be downgraded but my recent experiences on an A6 showed that an 'old' DVD will restore the firmware to the 'old' level on that DVD]

The last version of the firmware for European Audis, 1060, is available on all the 2G High Nav DVDs dated 2009 or later.

thanks Julian. i've also tried another cd with 3460 software, but i still get the same error issue. i'll pick up a cd cleaner and try that before i do anything else. thanks to you and Gunnar for the advice.
ps. apart from the Dension Gateway 500 unit, do you know of any other easy way to get music from an ipod/phone onto this system? i have bluetooth phone, but think that only does calls.
i used the Dension on an older XC90 and it worked well - just wondered if there was anything similar to your knowledge?

Dfor68; it's always best to start a new thread, so you don't confuse the existing thread.

    However, a few points:

    1) Your MMI is very old; it's version 0500, dating from 2004 week 13. You have a 6351 Control head, the one with Video input, so I can reasonably safely assume you have a TV. You would need to update the MMI to support an AMI. That means going to 5150/5570 using the 3CD set.
    2) AMIs are elegant in that they are incorporated into the MMI but they are cable based; they typically have either an iPod or a memory stick attached, using an appropriate cable. Audi used to sell a 'cable attached' Bluetooth adapter but they are very rare and almost unobtainable. Sorry, don't know the part number.
    3) Most Bluetooth solutions seem to use a third party 'add on'. Can't comment on that as I use an AMI with a USB attached; perhaps some others will recommend a good BT solution.
    4) The analog TV has potential for aux connections, so some solutions attach a BT adapter to the TV in the boot; can't comment on that either as I don't need to do that.
