recently rescued a k plate aaz engined golf from being scrapped. the cam belt had shredded but not broken and the timing had slipped. ii have fitted cam belt kit and re timed it runs fine but i noticed odd wear to the inside of the bottom pulley where it fits the sprocket and it wobbles a good'un when running, the sprocket has been inspected and is fine so i'm thinking there may be a problem with the pulley? is this common can anyone tell me? or is there likely another problem? any help gratiously recieved. thanks.

Did you change the bottom pulley before? Belts dont just shread - something has to happen to them... normally in the way of a dodgy pulley!

The face of the crank will need to be re-cut as the pulley coming loose severely damages the end of the crank and a new pulley will never run straight. There is a special tool for re-cutting the face of the crank in situ. This is a very common problem on the AAZ and many others, petrol and diesel. The KR/9A bottom pulley is different to that for an AAZ which is part number 028 105 263 C @ £24.62 and you MUST replace the bolt which is N 905 771 01 @ £1.61. The bolt MUST be tightened up to 90Nm plus an additional 90 degrees and the crank held solid using VW tool 3099. Sorry about the poor picture, I wish I could get Photo Bucket to work for me!

That runs out of true due to the one it is bolted to being loose and having slipped back. Take the toothed belt pulley off and the crank will be hammered. The Poly V belt dampers don't fail. It happened to my AAZ and many others I have seen but not just the AAZ although it does seem to happen to most of them.
