I know it's unavoidable, but why is it that the receipt paper always runs out either half way through printing my recaipt, or somebody in front of me.

But that's dependant on the petrol station.

Simple answer, use the Petrol stations later on at night.

    1. It's quieter
    2. The pumps are calibrated every morning, so release the amount of juice set by the machine, during the day this calebration becomes "looser" so by filling up at night you get a bit mroe fuel. Not a lot, but over the course of a month or two, it builds up.

Petrol/Diesel pumps are of what is known as custody transfer calibration standards, you are quite correct in that the calibration is slightly affected by ambient temperature as the density of the fuel does actually increase very very marginally with a drop in temperature but the increase is so small you would not see it at all for thousands of litres and the drift due to temperature is less than the required calibration tolerance which I think is 0.01% by volume or 0.1 of a ml per litre. to put it another way 1 litre of fuel in 10000 litres.

10,000 litres, that must be a week's worth of fuel for a Quattro driver

    Hi,
I would like to share my experience recently with Tesco petrol station. As usual all the pumps for the right side petrol tank were full. I was unfortunate to select this particular car and wait behind it. After waiting patiently for 12-15 minutes behind him I decided to fill on other pump which was free but was for the left side pertol tank (my petrol tank is in the right). At that time the pumps for the left side petrol tank were mostly free. I tried to park my car near to the curb but the length of the pipe was not enough to reach my tank. Then I turned around my car and to my surprise that the pump was locked by the salesperson. When I looked at him he was waving hand showing that turn around. I tried to request him but he was reluctant to allow me to fill on that pump (although it was free) then I had to turn my car around again and wait at other station to fill it. Because I was waiting for a long time I thought it was better to not wait any longer and tried on the other pump. I did what I thought was right. I would like to ask dear members whether I should have been allowed to fill when I turned around the car or was it a mistake and I broke a law or caused harm to anyone?

A lot of the sainsbury's petrol stations have long hoses which allow a fill up from either side, but put quite simply it's a matter of consideration and manners, some people have them and sadly some do not.
I am unaware that any law requires you to fill from the same side as your filler, as far as making it a law, don't give our government ideas, this would be another easy way to generate revenue whilst doing nothing about real crime, can you imagine it? a pump camera or some adenoidal two stripe tinpot pisspot military hitler council official issuing you with a kindly worded invitation to pay a fixed penalty?

I also have waited patiently behind someone who has filled up only to see them buying half of the store and basically having a browse whilst holding everyone else up.
There are parking spaces but sadly people just can't be bothered to pay for the fuel and then re park it's just too much to ask that they consider someone other than themselves.
I now just don't use the combined supermarket/stations anymore, if everybody did that they'd soon introduce a system to sort it out but until they do the retailers don't give a tinker's cuss either.

I hate it when your waiting behind someone, they filll up, pay etc, move their car forward to the next pump, you wait a min or so for them to move cause you want to use the pump infront (being considerate for others), you get fed up of waiting and get out of the car and decide to fill up, then as you open ya filler cap they move off thus making you look like a incosiderate **** for not using the pump in front (rant over)-lol

I agree with almost all of the points in the original post apart from the one about going to either side of the pump as the hose will stretch.

Yes, more often than not it will stretch, however, I don't want the hose draping over the back of my car and scratching the paintwork if I can help it.

No I can't wrap my car in cotton wool but i'd rather not contribute knowingly to the scratches the car will inevitably get, thanks.

Hence I will always drive to the pump/filler side.
