I know there is loads of stuff on oil changes however, my car is currently on 9800 miles. It is saying the oil change is due in 469 days or 1200 miles.

My service book thingy (car is on electric servicing record) in the car says an oil change every 9000 miles or when the car asks for it.
People on here say every 10k.
    Car is saying 11k.

Could this be because it has needed me to top up the oil previously so it's going on the oil quality (which had been refreshed now with around 2 litres).

Do I wait until it asks for an oil change or take it in on 10k?

Hi. I have a MY 15(65) that was 2 years old last November when it had its first service at just under 9000 miles. The service booklet is confusing as it says 18k or 2 years or earlier if it's set to viarable servicing. At just over a year old I took it in asking if it was due an oil change as it had only done around 4K as I was not sure as to the life of the oil against mileage. I was informed nothing to do until either 18k or 2 years no problem with oil life if under either of these, they gave it a free inspection and all was good. You seam to have got through a lot of oil for 9k mine used nothing up to its service. The level check appears to be fairly accurate as after the service it showed below max the service manager topped it up with 200ml and it was at max (observed by me befor leaving) and no loss of oil since, around 800 miles. So would think you may have a problem with oil loss/use. How old is it, BTW mine is a2L ultra if that helps.

Mine is a 2017 (registered in March) 3.0 Bitdi.

I asked Audi about the oil usage and they said it's within normal range of what the Bitdi uses. I seem to recall them saying anything up to something like 1litre per 800 miles or something ridiculous like that is considered within normal range.

There is definitely no oil loss from the car. No dripping or stains anywhere.

I don't hang around when I drive so assume that's one reason why it has a thirst for oil, although I don't recall ever topping up previous cars as much as this one (with the exception of my Honda which does also get through a good amount of oil but I don't do hardly any mileage in that so it's hard to compare).

WOW. So in 9k Audi think that up to 2 gallons of burnt oil OK. That's around 2 sumps ! I can understand some use but that seams excessive for a modern car no matter how it's driven. Better add half a litre every time you fill up with fule. This may be correct but excessive maybe other owners of Btdi's can give there experience on this, maybe it will improve with mileage. Good luck.

That's what I thought. My last car (Golf R) was driven hard as hell and it never had a top up in 17k.

By audi's estimate you'd never get to an oil change at 10k as there wouldn't be any oil in it! Luckily it tells you when the oil is low and it wants a top up.

I bought a 4l can half price at Tesco of the long life Castrol oil and just have that on hand now to top up as and when it asks for it.

If there are any problems, it's under warranty and I've already flagged it with Audi and they said it's normal... I won't keep it past 3 years I reckon as I rarely keep a car even that long but will see whether the oil consumption improves....

We are just doing an Ultra's second service and we did the first one last year but we did not have access to the online service system then. You can chnage the settings to do what you like, last year I chnaged this car to 12400 miles and 365 days on the oil change and 24800/730 on the inspection which is what we have done today. I set the mileage like this because he does 12K a year which is more than the 9300 I set them at but it is on longlife oil so 12K is easy and not damaging like 18K+ so basically I tweak the settings to suit the customers use and keep me happy knowing the engine is being looked after.

Hi. So on an ultra is 2 years with around 9k (4-5k a year) ok or should I get oil done at 12 months using Audi spec oil and filter ? Audi tell me it's Ok at 2 years with the mileage..

On my 2017 3.0 272 it's 2 years or 19k miles (whichever is 1st) between services, but I had the oil and filter changed at 9.5k (that was at 7 months old) and didn't reset the service indicator as I got an specialist independent to do it. I think 2 years/ 19k is too long, especially for a brand new engine. On your ultra, I would get it done at 1 year if I did less than 10k miles. I think the 1st oil change is really important on a new engine.

Regarding oil consumption, my oil level was at max after the oil change at 9.5k miles and I have just topped back up to max with 1/2 litre and the mileage is now 16,900. I guess this means 1 litre every 15k miles or so? That is about the same as my last A6, which was a 2L. I'm quite careful with the engine when it's cold by never revving it over 2k rpm until it is up to temperature. Not sure if that affects oil consumption?

I did exactly the same, had an indi do the change at 10k. I probably saved £50 doing it this way rather than letting the dealer do it, so debatable if it was worth the effort to go to an indi.

I am using oil at roughly the same rate - my last 3.) tdi though was using 1l every 4500 miles. I now monitor oil useage so yu can see a pattern developing. My last car gradually reduced down to this useage, and then levelled off, so I relaxed. I have even had oil analysed in the past to see if anything untoward is wearing - very useful for perfomance engines when you are looking for wear from big end bearings which puts lead then copper into the oil for example.

I've just gone past 93k miles in my 62 plate 3.0 BiTdi and it has never used any oil between services. I have the oil changed every 10k by my excellent, local independent VW Audi specialist. I gave up watching the service indicator, just get it done every 10k miles, which for me is always less than a year. Had the ATF changed at last service as well.

    Superb car...
