Today the passenger door wouldn't open, we opened it from the inside, but now it won't lock :-(. Also electric window won't open or close.
all other doors and windows OK.

Any suggestions on where to start looking?? Any common faults? I can't hear the locking mechanism trying to activate when I use the key fob, and the accompanying window fault suggests electrical fault.

    Thanks

From your title I assumed you meant drivers door but the post says passenger door.
If we go with drivers door, it is common for the wires inside the flexi boot between the A pillar and the door hinge, to become damaged internally due to years of continued open/close of the door, sometimes the locking goes, sometimes the window, the speaker at the top, the mirror function, sometimes all of the above or a combination of any of the above.
Take a peep and you could either repair as required or replace the loom.

    Good luck

Nope definitely passenger side!! Took the loom out this afternoon, and the outside cable cloth wrap is very wet.. however I checked continuity and it appeared ok. I might just get a scrappy replacement

OK, ordered up a used (but apparently working) loom from ebay, fitted it this afternoon, it's made sod-all difference :-(

Also noticed that the car doesn't detect when the passenger door is open, and also the passenger mirror doesn't move either. Anyone recommend where to go from here?

What is the controlbox with the window motor in responsible for? Is there any electronics in there that could have gotten fried and stop EVERYTHING from working on the door? Or does it just control the electric windows winder motor?

Some update for others that may be at the end of their diagnostics, and resorted to what garages do, start swapping out parts dumbly.

Found a door window motor unit today at a scrap yard, the last latter in the part number was different (mine was a F, this was a B and it was a 4 year older B7). However everything else looked the same, so the scrapyard owner let me try before buying (much thanks Angel Autos in Dorset...), anyway everything suddenly started working perfectly, and the last letter difference has no obvious effect (revision letter???). Anyway, this box is actually responsible for all door control, and if it gets fried (like I suspect mine did, due to the dodgy door wiring), everything will stop working in the door, no door open sense, no electric mirror, no electric window, no door locking.

As you can see from the pic, it's got alot of stuff in there, including a CAN module and a CPU.

So my only question is, does anyone know the significance of the last letter of VAG part numbers? Should I be concerned that mine is now wrong? As I said it all seems to be working just fine... Just curious to know really.

Well done. It is really nice to see someone take the trouble to post the solution to their problem when they get there

I agree with you that I think the final letter is a revision number but although most items may be compatible I don't think you can always rely on it. Having said that I would expect an electronics module like yours would definitely not work if it wasn't compatible.
