    Folks,

Quick question re certain warning lights.
    I have a 01 VW Passat 2E 2.0 Petrol Car.
Bought it last May from a Private Sale.
It runs fine but within a month of the sale The
Exhaust Emission Warning Light came on and has been on since.
I was led to believe that alot of these warning lights are down to faulty sensors and so have left it till now.
Around a month ago I started getting eggy smells coming in from the radiator fans and when i pull the windscreen jets??!
It only happens once in a blue moon, but makes me think that maybe the CAT is giving problems...
Now this w/end The EPC Light (engine management system) has also come on and stayed on!!
I accept now that something dodge is going down but wondering should I get an official VW dealer to look into it or simply bring it to an advance pitstop garage?
I don't want to spend a small fortune or anything.
It's due a service and thats another thing it keeps telling me every time I turn it on...
and also to put a cherry on the cake, the check brake pads warning light has now come on this w/end as well!!!!

I swear.. I'm a good father to this car!!!
it just seems to be falling to sh!t around me these days....

    any advice is greatly welcomed...

    thanx

    k

    Hello

I don't think I can be of much help but this happened to us also - we have 51 plate 1.8 turbo sport. This light came on so we had it looked at and the fault removed - nothing could be found. It then came on again when we were on holiday in france, a couple of days later the car completely packed up - steam coming out of the exhaust, no brakes, everything. We had to have it towed back to France and a couple of people have said it could be the head or head gasket. We can't afford the money it will cost to risk someone looking at it incase it isn't that - so let me know if you find anymore out. PS Ours has been off the road since August as we are worried about doing more damage.

I too have a passat 01 2.0 SE with an ongoing emission warning light problem. It has had 3 new lamda sensors, a new air mass meter, a new air pump/valve, and the wiring checked for consistency. I have had the car a year now and still the light keeps coming back on! the workshop guys now tell me they 'think' it could be a problem with the ECU but are not sure! any suggestions? The error messages that keep coming up are pretty consistent; fuel system too rich, sporadic probe fault and electrical fault of some sort - I can't remember exact wording of the latter. I am unaware of the codes as engineer clears them too fast! Engine tick over brilliant, emissions all brilliant and runs like a baby - just the bloomin light keeps coming on - oh and the engineer seems to think that it predominantly comes on when engine is cold - oh and the air pump although works great when tested independantly, seems to be the issue somehow as sometimes when ticking over when cold stops working properly. H-E-L-P?!

Kormak, first of all, get a fault code read done. This can cost from about £25 at an independent garage.
