    HI

    just want a little advice...

ive noticed a few problems starting my car - it seems to struggle to start when left overnight and i thought it maybe the alternator and then a few days later a message came on my display and said alternator workshop.

I was just wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost for a new alternator for my golf mk4 gti? inc labour? also would it be best to get it done at a vw garage or a smaller independent garage?

    cheers

well i put a voltmeter to the test on my battery and when the car turnsover and is idling it is at 14.5+ when i turn on everything (lights, heaters etc) it drops between 12.5ish - 13.5 depending what ive got on. i assume its normal to drop a few v's when everything is switched on?

the problem occurs when i leave the car for a long period (say over night) and when i go to start it up it doesnt turnover until you put your foot on the accelerator or until you try to turn it over 2-3 more times.

So i assume this maybe a problem with the battery not holding its charge? could this be correct? because if it was my alternator then it could fail to start the car at any point of the day regardless of how long ive left it?

Anyone shed some light on this? or would it be best to get my battery tested when you get a charge put over it before i go a start replacing stuff?

after a more detailed inspection ive noticed a slight grinding noise when i start the engine up from cold. i couldnt hear this originally because ive always started it myself but i got my missus to whilst i had the bonnet up.

Could i be right in thinking it maybe the starter motor on its ways out?

and if so how much does one cost?

I'd get the battery checked first....
The cold weather is notorious for killing batteries.

    Hope you get sorted soon
