I see you removed 4 bolts? Here are pics from ELSA with some info (not so useful to be honest), and it shows just 3 bolts (see last pic)?
Or did you remove bolts that hold top plastic clear window?

Yes exactly, those three bolts are for the whole HUD unit. The four I removed hold just the top half of HUD with the clear plastic window.

So, I did some research... And while RHD/LHD units seems to be different outside, I think A6/A7 units are similar (if not identical) inside. Here are 3 pics of A7 HUD, it's obvious that outside trim is different, but can you look closely at the pics showing HUD inside, is it the same as yours A6 HUD, particularly mirror? I've found A7 RHD unit for £200, might be a good idea to get it and replace my mirror?

    HUD_A7_RHD.jpg HUD_RHD.jpg HUD_A7_RHD_3.jpg

And if they differ... Well, then will need to repair my own mirror. Can you give me some info about it (maybe even pics?), so I can contact companies that do recoating - size, material, shape etc. So far I've found just companies that do lenses/mirrors for telescopes (astronomy), but maybe they can do this HUD mirror as well. Also, can you tell me (maybe PM), what company did you contact about your mirror recoating?

    Thanks in advance!

Sure. The mirror in those A7 HUD pictures looks exactly the same, except mirrored (no pun here). To be honest I'd be very surprised if they spent the extra money to design two systems into two cars (A6&A7) that have 95% same dash and share same windshield I believe.

Here's some pics, I have removed the old coating so it's now see-through but the coating was on the convex side of the plastic. You can see here that the radius of the curvature is not fixed throughout the mirror surface. In case you need them, the dimensions for the mirror are 40x70/80mm. Two of the parallel sides are different lenght, hence the extra 10mm on the second dimension.

If you find someone who sells these, or recoats economically, let me know!

EDIT: Oh and I think I need 2 more posts to be able to send PM's!

The a6 and A7 HUD mirrors are exactly the same. Not sure if the they vary between lhd & rhd? The black retainer that holds that small mirror actually has rhd printed on it iirc

So, yesterday I've replaced my HUD's flaked mirror and want to share some info with others who might have the same issue.

First of all, I'd want to say huge thanks to JariYliJ for inspiration and useful hints, without his experience I wouldn't dare to do it all myself.

    Few facts:
    - It seems that this issue with mirror is very common with early HUD revisions (A6/A7 cars with MY11/12).
    - LHD and RHD HUD units are completely different (not just outside, but inside as well), you can't use RHD unit/mirror in LHD car.
    - A6 and A7 HUD units are literally identical inside (outside trim/cover is different). Units from different revisions are almost the same (MY, pre-facelift and facelift) - most likely they have different software, but hardware is identical. Although A6/A7 HUD mirrors are identical physically, they have different part numbers stamped on them (A7 says "C7 RL Coupe", A6 says "C7 RL Limo"), but once again, they are identical. So if someone decides to get donor HUD unit, all you need to check is RHD or LHD, other than that, any unit will suit (but don't forget to check the HUD mirror in donor unit first).
    - There are few companies that can repair your mirror, if you can't find donor unit. The cheapest option I've found was from Vacuum Coatings Ltd (Scientific Mirrors), they quoted me £24 + P&P for full mirror repair.
    - The whole process takes about 2-3 hours, depending on tools you've got.

How it all begun - I've bought MY11 A6, everything was perfect, except one issue - image on the windscreen looked like this:

    20170917_020219.jpg

At beginning I thought that it's just a condensation (looks like water drops), but some research showed me that it's defective mirror and needs to get repaired. I went to Audi Centre and they confirmed that the whole HUD has to be replaced and quoted £2000+ for that. After few seconds, when I was able to speak again, I said thanks and bye. Then I went to some local Audi Specialists garage. They said that they had exactly the same issue some time ago with another customer, they replaced the whole HUD with used one and recoded it. They quoted around £900 (£400-500 for used HUD, £200-300 for the labour and another £200 for calibration). They said that they'll have to remove the whole windscreen to replace the HUD (and it will require calibration after that).

And then JariYliJ posted his findings on this forum...

I've decided to try to do it all myself, and go with donor HUD unit, as I was lucky to find cheap used HUD from 2015 A7 (unit in very good condition, negotiated from £300 to £200). I thought that I could do some practice to remove the mirror from donor unit, before I touch my car, and might keep it for later, just in case I'll need some spare parts. So, here's the donor HUD I've got:

    20171021_210030.jpg

Now, the process. You will need some tools. Here are tools that I've used - trim removal tool, spiked tool to loosen plastic clips, set of torx keys and drives (I'd suggest to get few different ones...) - you will need T20 torx key (and maybe T15), baseless sticky tape (I've attached it to the end of torx head, to keep removed screws from falling down), strong tape to attach HUD cover to the windscreen, cleaning compound (it's amazing...) to clean internal HUD area from silver flakes, and some lens cleaner and microfiber tissue to clean HUD cover when finished.

    20171021_205616.jpg

Remove HUD cover from dash panel. Use trim removal tool to lift cover up, and then gently pull it towards you to take it out.

    20171021_125728.jpg

Now you can see the HUD unit.

    20171021_125827.jpg

Remove plastic trim piece from HUD unit. Use spike tool to loosen 6 clips (2 from each side - front, left and right), then push it a bit towards the front of the car and lift it up.

    20171021_130100.jpg 20171021_130556.jpg

Now you need to remove 4 screws (T20) that hold HUD's top cover (no need to remove screws that hold HUD itself). Two screws on the front are very easy to remove, there is a lot of room to work. You should use something to prevent screws from falling down inside dashboard. It might be magnetic torx head, or something sticky - I was using baseless sticky tape to cover torx head, then screw was sticking to it and didn't fall down. Here are 2 screws on the front.

    20171021_130827.jpg 20171021_131120.jpg

Two screws on the rear are much more difficult to remove. There is literally no room to work, it's very easy to fall down your torx key, and screws are extremely tight, need to apply good force to loosen them. It took me about an hour to remove those 2 screws, mostly because I didn't have proper tools (if key/driver is too long, windscreen will not let you in, if too short, you won't be able to reach the screw, if it's not rock solid, you won't be able to loosen tight screw). I've ended up making "lever" from 2 tools, to be able to apply proper force to loosen screws.

    20171021_131432.jpg 20171021_131440.jpg

When screws are removed, don't lift the cover yet, you need to remove data cable and foam gasket. To remove cable, loosen it's top clip (I was using the same spike tool) and pop it out (it has just one clip). Then remove foam gasket, slowly and gently detaching sticky layer from plastic (otherwise you might tear it). Now you can lift HUD's top cover. I wasn't able to get it out completely (it might be possible though), instead I've used strong tape to stick cover to the windscreen.

    20171021_151620.jpg

Can remove the mirror now. There are 2 screws (T20), one of them is easily accessible, but for 2nd screw I didn't have proper key (you need really short angled key, less than 15mm, mine was 20mm), so I've used T15 key, as it let me insert torx head at small angle. Now can remove mirror easily (might need to apply small force to pull it out).

    20171021_151631.jpg

Mirror removed. Notice silver flakes all over the HUD (will clean them later on).

    20171021_153526.jpg 20171021_153536.jpg

New mirror from A7 donor unit and original mirror with detaching silver surface from A6.

    20171021_153940.jpg

Using cleaning compound, remove silver flakes from HUD internal area. I've used compound for electronics (phones, laptops, mice etc) - really great stuff, it isn't greasy, doesn't stick, just absorbs all dirt into it. I was trying to use vacuum cleaner first - zero results, tissue didn't help either, then I remembered I've had that compound and it did the trick.

    20171021_154552.jpg

    Attach new mirror.

    20171021_160435.jpg

Check if everything is working, put back 4 screws, attach foam gasket and data cable, clean top cover, put back plastic trim, put back HUD top trim cover.

Use VCDS to clear errors (I reckon there were about 4 errors).

After mirror replacement image looks like this:

    20171021_155738.jpg 20171022_023809.jpg

The whole process took me about 3 hours (the longest was to remove 2 rear screws). Saved some hundred pounds.

    hi
i am new to the forum after joining for this exact repair. I have searched the site for a7 forum so i could find the company but I am unable to find the info. I apologise if it’s obvious, I’m not that good on forums. Would it be possible to put a link or tell me the name.
    regards
