Is there a known fault associated with this. Can it be fixed under a guarantee?

It is a well known problem but unlikely to get anything after 4 years. The dealer may give you some goodwill if you are a regular customer but it's not something I would expect. Rust would be covered under the 12 year warranty if it meets the criteria.

A3 8P and A4 8E/A6 4F Avant models are notorious for rear wiper motor failure. The warranty on VAG parts is two years to the day on production of receipt of purchase or installation by a VAG dealer. Getting warranty on genuine VAG parts is a sketch, if you have fitted the part yourself it gets even worse and if you bought the part from TPS you have no choice but to take the car to the marque appropriate dealer who will be only too pleased to help you with warranty on a part they did not sell or fit......
