For work I use the car for powering a charger, the charger draws quite alot of power, 40A as a minimum. When charging I have the car running to keep the battery topped up, but on tickover the alternator is not generating properly and not producing sufficient elactictrickery to keep up with the current draw.

Is it possible to fit a higher amperage alternator, or some kind of switch to raise tickover rpm when required?

    Car is an Allroad 2.7t

    Thanks

Could you first get the output checked on your current alternator? It maybe not putting out sufficient current due to worn brushes, regulator issues. An alternator can wack a lot of amperage even at idle, if reguired. Do you know the output on your alt.?

Some places can rewind an alternator for a higher output.

Its probably getting low, i suspect its the original alt and its now over 10 years old. I am also drawing quite high amps, say 40 amps from it.

I will also look into getting something wound for higher output. It would be good to be able to charge on the road without having to take a generator along
