Steering wheel knocking when turning right only

Hi,

You are my hope to find root cause, as I don't want to exchange everything as some mechanics suggest

I'm facing some strange constant knocking from steering wheel when turning to the right only, car is Audi A6 C6 2007.
I have exchanged power steering fluid some 2 months ago to Febi 6162 (mineral) and it was okay - for 2 months.
Wheel started to knock again, but not all the time. Only when warmed up and only at low speeds/parking manuevers - but appears randomly, if You really want to hear it might not happen (Murphies law?) . Again I exchanged fluid but with minor result this time. Susspension okay, no leaks, power steering fluid level okay, no error codes in VCDS.

Wouldn't CV joint do it only when rapid acceleration applied on turned wheels and definitely not when stationary (unless it's totaly ruined)? This knocking is more hearable inside of the car, not outside. It's also possible to feel this knocking on hands when steering the wheel to the right, but very very slightly. And as last, CV joint when defective is always giving appropriate sound, in my case it happens sometimes.
Or You mean some CV joint in steering column - if there is any?

Sounds like it is in column area, is esp lights etc all ok.

Indeed, sounds like it comes from steering column area - or could such a knocking be caused by steering gear? There are no alerts or warnings at dashboard, VCDS also detects no issues.

Noise hard to hear/determine but some models have a clock spring type component in there which may be fouling on something,
or maybe a slip ring ?
My advice would be to describe the noise as something other than knocking, in a new post,and you may get better replies.
You could have a look behind the plastic tray and see if anything is rubbing on column,and inspect the joint at bulkhead

Hi Micheal,

To remove plastic try I have to remove steering wheel I guess? This is any way a good place to start I believe. Well, for me it sounds like a knocking - but I'm open for some new better definition

I was counting to find someone who experienced same issues

Seen few posts about it, but no answers so far.

Avoid steering wheel removal if possible due to air bag issues etc.
I had a look at video again,hard to hear properly,but now wondering if it may be hydraulic related,the noise does not appear to follow
steering wheel motion. If you stop turning while noise is present does the noise stop abruptly,or maybe a minute delay.
My thoughts were a rubbing sound in area under steering wheel,now I am doubting that.
Hope more experienced people will help out.

Honestly I was worried about steering wheel removal exactly due to air bag.
Noise/knocking is present only when doing a turn, when wheel is not turned any more noise dissapears. Summarizing --> when turning then knocking
