    Quick question.

I have a 2017 A6 with the tech pack, love the fact I can have both my phones connected at once and I'd like to use Audi connnect. Can i use the Bluetooth phone connection for data or do I need a third data sim?

you can tell the car whether to use a phone sim or the dedicated car sim for data. In my case its cheaper to use a dedicated sim as a data only sim is cheaper than PAYG.

I agree with mikeruss a separate sim installed works fine. I got a 24 gb sim for about £25 from Amazon with over three years shelf life on the 3 network. Mine btw uses hardly anything in data terms and I always use the google maps with traffic ( except the last couple of days when It was down)

Can't use the iPhone SIM, that I take it you've got from your signature. Something to do with Apple not implementing the features needed, might be called RSAP from memory. Have you got another phone? If not data sim only way to go.

Correct. In order to use the data connection from a mobile phone for Audi Connect you need a phone that supports rSAP. Apple do not support this and nor do many Android phones, although for those that do not support it and depending on the version of Android the phone uses, it is possible to jail break the phone to make it support rSAP. The increasingly widespread adoption of CarPlay and Android Auto will make this less of an issue going forward. Also on my wife's new Golf (pre the recent facelift) the phone and navigation system work in reverse to the way Audi implememted it. You set the phone up as a mobile hotspot and then connect the navigation to the phone via wifi. Makes a lot more sense to do it this way round

The VW way surprises me as you are then using the phone's aerial instead of the car's rooftop aerial (which is vastly superior), and the drain on your phone is huge, whereas your phone drops into a low battery-usage state when it forms an rSAP connection.

One of the original goals of rSAP was to eliminate mobile phone radio waves within the car's cabin by using the car's external aerial.

But so few phones support now rSAP it is clearly a feature that has failed to gain industry acceotance and is almost a pointless feature to offer. Using a widely adopted industry standard makes it easy for the car manufacturer and avoids the need for them to be constantly having to change internal systems to support the latest phone technology, which evolve a much faster rate than car systems they are trying to attach to. On the A6 you can only even think about using the external phone aerial if you have MMI+, those with the RMC system can only use the phone's own aerial

Samsung supports it and has about 20% of mobile phone sales. Plus, rSAP is a heavily requested android feature request. Personally, I suspect it is a political issue between the phone manufacturers and the automotive industry; on a technical level there is no reason for any phone not to support rSAP, it is such a beautiful piece of integration of two systems - vastly more useful that CarPlay or Auto (both of which require a cable connection and, realistically, a touchscreen).

Put a sim in it, apart from getting google earth style maps on the nav does it actually do anything else?
