Vw passat b6 passat 2.0 tdi sport cam shaft sensor replacement

Hi Everyone
Just about to do the cam shaft sensor on my little red lady. I know I will have to take the timing belt off to get at the sensor. so a little background of the issues. I have since recently changed the reverse light sensor. I did a scan with vcds and the cam and crank sensor came up faulty. this weekend I was able to change the crank sensor which was a pain by the way. i cleared the scan and did a another after. the crank sensor was cleared but the cam sensor was still present. the car will take two or more cranks for it to start and some times it start and a second or two later it will die. Any ideas anyone?? ETA to job 6 days and a few hours. The little red lady as been set to TDC. I have a few questions on the job above . i hoping someone will be able to help me with.

1. is there any way of testing the cam sensor using vcds??

2. what measurements should the cam sensor read?

3. Will the cam sensor stop the engine from starting??

Both crank and cam position sensors kaput at once and so soon after another electrical sensor was replaced? A strange coincidence.

I had the DPF sensor and turbo actuator loom (runs along the back of the cam cover) burn onto my turbo heat shield a year or so ago and one of the resulting codes was the crank sensor was faulty (apart from the car increasing revs, then dying, then being a pig to start). My scan had 2 codes, one being a voltage issue with sensor or circuit A and the other the crank sensor. I bought a new sensor and was gearing up to change it when the car died suddenly again and had to be towed back home by the AA. When I looked at the wiring I noticed the loom stuck to the heat shield and the sleeving melted. Once peeled off one or two small wires were exposed making an earth with the car. Re-insulated the wires and repositioned the loom and the car was perfect again. Nothing wrong with the crank sensor.

Bottom line is that are you sure there is not an electrical short somewhere triggering red herring codes for the crank and cam sensors? Can you post the full VCDS scan?

good idea, what you are saying is a possibility that could be the cause. but the fact that i changed it and the fault went away. I would be likely to think that the sensor was faulty
