Does the spare wheel need to be the same size on a quattro?

    Thanks

    Erm yes.

I have a spare for my summer set and another for my winter set, all 5 are the same 18" size/offset/pdc/bore on both sets. So if you've 17, 18 or 19 inch wheels your spare really should be the same size imo. Am not aware of anyone running a spacesaver on an A6, but could be wrong

    Why do you ask?

Car came without a spare it has 255/35/19 tyres. I got a cheap 16 inch wheel and was about to fit a 205/60/15 which would give a rolling radius of 326.2mm compared to the 19's 330.6mm
    (Height 661.1mm - 652.4 or 8.7 mm shorter)

In other words the spare would be 1.3% smaller however I'm concerned about wrecking the Quattro system driving on a slightly small spare. full size spares in this size are daft money though

    I'd not.

The reason I stuck with 18" rims is that they are 10 a penny, ok not that cheap but I can easily pick up a ronal in that size for under £80

Rims and rubber on anything larger is silly money...but people are willing to pay it.

I could use a 215/60/16 that would give only a 0.5% difference but that would require buying a tyre instead of one I have lying around.

I could also inflate the spare to 60psi which would likely overcome the size difference.

with a 205/60 on its would only be like driving with one tyre slightly under inflated the difference is negligible

Is this a joke? If not let me know when you are driving and I will stay off the roads. On any car a miss match of tyres on the same axle is an mot fail. All 4wd need all 4 to be the same.

Stewart, I think 590 in the tyre business so is probably aware of the above.

I remember I carried a 245/40/18 as a spare when my actual tyre size (on my profile pic car) is 245/45, which is fine to use for a few miles, worst still the car has a staggered set 255's on the rear. Yep the driving dynamics and safety will be compromised but if a short term measure fine.

60psi is a bit of a worry though!

Correct I own a tyre company and am well versed in things like this.

All tyres must be able to take at least 120 psi and part worns are tested to this pressure (not that I would ever deal in part worn) 60psi is fine over a short distance and in fact can really improve economy for wider tyres. I would never suggest running higher than recommended for the obvious reason that any saving would be negated by the fact you'll ruin your tyres and wear the middle out.

Most cars have space savers that are slightly smaller than the rest of their tyres, yes it will fail an mot but what knob head would take his car for an MOT with the spare on.

I carry 3 other methods of repairing the tyre before I'd even attempt to fit a spare I just don't like going without, obviously I keep spare tyres in the correct size at home so It would only ever be a very temp measure.

there isn't really any need to be a **** about it is there. I asked a simple question If you have issue with it then pass on by no skin off my nose.

You are however correct all 4 need to be the same and in fact all 4 should be within 1mm of each other or you risk ruining the system. although tyre telling that to someone who just wants to buy 1 tyre

There ok I carry black 12 inch ones that are a lot better as you can twist them to a knot on the inside. They seal much better. Again only very temporary but great when your on a tough spot.
