cheap parts, thats what its down to, cheap parts. if the engineers wern't accountable to the accountants then cars would last a bit longer, but they arn't and they don't. and egr valve should be made from metal, heavy cast metal, with metal gears inside but they are made from plastic with plastic gears. plastic gets hot and distorts then lets water in.

This cannot necessarily be pinned solely at the door of the bean counters. Metal casings and metal gears are heavier and cannot be moulded to fit tight spaces compered to plastics. These are the consideration an engineer needs to appreciate before a bean counter sticks their oar in. A good industrial standardised plastic will not be susceptible to heat cycling and/or distortion and can provide as good a job as metal casing/gears. Now using such plastics may have been pooh poo-ed by the bean counters.

My gosh, I've just defended a bean counter....

2012 car same as yours 22k only the clock - none of which was short local journeys. "Your DPF is blocked and we will have to replace it and all the sensors £2600 + vat please sir"

Guess what route I went down - just passed its MOT well within smoke test spec - goes like someone has stopped strangling it and does 50mpg regularly at 80mph ish on the motorway - £800 - best thing I ever did - totally transformed.

Maybe the best way forward would be a government with some boll ock s to introduce compulsory destruction orders on vehicles where it's been removed. ....but that's just my opinion. I been working on this rubbish since it came out. To be honest though it's not been easy for consumer's. We were dogged with faulty injectors faulty egr valve coolers faulty exhaust gas pressure sensors faulty exhaust gas temperature sensors. I get why some customers have gone and removed it and defrauded VED . Oh and a emissions defeat software.
