I'm definitely no mechanic I just researched oil for more than 5 minutes , lol .

It's a confusing maze at first , total bamboozle stuff , then the penny drops and it all clicks in and makes sense .

So as one would expect the A8 4.2 tdi to have a dpf , is this a PD or CR engine ?

Irrespective the two Quantum ( VW owned ) oils 505.01 5W40 and 507.00 5W30 don't have that units of viscosity difference to negate a consumption difference .

Other makes of 505.01 5W40 are slightly thicker but as before 505.01 is a step back in quality and not VW DPF friendly according to Quantum anyway .

As 5W40 505.01 is a step back in quality , the way forward if you have a dpf thus require a C3 and suffer oil consumption issues is to up from high quality to an even higher quality niche product with better thermal stability...

Fuchs Titan Race Pro C3 5W30 ( not a LongLife oil, change annually ) , it will contain more top group 5 Ester oil basestock .

    Group 5 -

Group V base oils are classified as all other base oils, including silicone, phosphate ester, polyalkylene glycol (PAG), polyolester, biolubes, etc. These base oils are at times mixed with other base stocks to enhance the oil’s properties. An example would be a PAO-based compressor oil that is mixed with a polyolester. Esters are common Group V base oils used in different lubricant formulations to improve the properties of the existing base oil. Ester oils can take more abuse at higher temperatures and will provide superior detergency compared to a PAO synthetic base oil, which in turn increases the hours of use .
