I know about so called gearbox 'life fluids' , baaaddd idea and VAG BS .

5W30 LongLife III has higher performance parameters than 5W40 505.01 Platinum .

Why put in a medium quality oil when you can put in high ?

A single grade varies by roughly 4 Centistokes so 1 is miniscule and negligible .

If it had signs oil leakage then that's the route I would go down, it's not a super car that's under extreme conditions.

Pd engines, these can run on almost any quality oil grade practical ( check autodata) and providing the oil was changed as and when it should (or before) the engines out lived the dinosaurs, and these was hard wearing on cam lobes if you didn't stick to oil intervals.

Maybe I'm missing your point I dunno and tomorrow I will figure out your point but for now I don't.

PD engines cannot simply run on any oil it has to be HTHS to avoid wear of the narrow cam lobes.

The cams are not forged but chill cast and once the hardened top coat is comprimised the best oil in the world won't save it .

If you had oil consumption issues I would look at the very best 5W40 racing ester marketed oils , namely , Fuchs Titan Race Pro S , Gulf Competition , Red Line , Motul 300V , and Millers CFS Nanodrive , not dpf friendly due to possible ZDDP content .

High temperature heat shield (hths) or whatever, on a pd engine providing you don't go thinner than a 10w you should be ok, 5w being the best option.

Gaz - what does zddp oils mean again?

    OMG what have I started.

No oil leaks, little history, I have done oil change this weekend and car drives a bit quieter/smoother.

Will change the oil again after 10k, to the long life oil, which was super cheap @£20 for 5litres, after this not sure what oil to go for or whether to Stick to a 10k servicing schedule.

The car is used at the weekends, where it is given a motorway run, to lubricate its parts.

Also the 50 to 80 is very quick indeed, making this car a motorway bruiser.

    Nooo not at all,

I respect what gaz says his obviously a very knowledgeable mechanic, I think both our views make sense.

You would only change to a slightly thinker oil if you noticed any oil loss,
For example I have serviced cars whereby they seem to use a little too much and changing to a thicker oil (still vw spec for engine) can reduce this.

As an engine gets old with very little service schedules, parts and seals becomes a little out of tolerance and you can notice it using a little more than expected, having said all this your engine maybe fine on the other spec oil and not use any oil at all.

It's all suggestions and trial and error mate

    Yes thanks,

thats is why I was thinking of a thicker oil, I can't see any oil leaks and the mechanic put in 10litrs, so see how I get on.

in the past I have serviced my car every 5k, with cheaper oil (semi) that has worked well, but today cars are more advanced and unfortunately more electronic.

No just keep using the 5/30 then,

I just double checked autodata and it does only recommend 5/30 dpf low ash oil anyway,
Vw 507.00 and this is so the dpf last longer.
