Polo Engine Problem

Hi, Im having some problems with a 2000 1.4 polo auto and im hoping someone here can help me. The car keeps acting up, it started off when the engine was revving or "hunting" when the car was idle, usually at traffic lights. It would continue doing it even if the car was placed into park or neutral with the handbrake on and kept getting more violent and revving more. Today it decided to rev for a split second and then cut out on me at a set of lights. Any idea what could be causing this? The car was purchased under a month ago was apparently serviced by the sales place but there are no receipts to back this up. thanks for any replies

You need a fault code read. What Polo is it, 6N1 or 6N2 and what engine code is it?
