Only VCDS can do the reset, a worthwhile investment as mine paid for itself in the first 6 months

Also you can service it yourself, or pay anyone to do the service & do the reset yourself, takes 2 minutes.

As Luke mentions, if you put your location in people close by can chime in

Some of the later ones are becoming a sketch to reset, the display calls it an oil change and service but VCDS calls the same actions service and inspection respectively in fact VCDS is pretty much useless for its auto service reset and always has been, I cant remember when it ever got one right so you have to do each value individually in adaptation whilst watching the MMI or dash display until you get what you want. I have worked out my own way of setting them now so the warnings come up as I want them to, not the stupid long timing chain wrecking intervals Audi use.

Took me a good few goes to hit the right option in the reset pull down menu in VCDS. I do 9k mile oil changes and was on my 2nd oil change when the time for service came on.

Thanks for the replies, I just knew it wouldnt be simple
    Im in Maidstone Kent.
I do all the work myself on all our cars/house you name it I fix it and always have done, being a truck mech does occasionally come in handy, luckily all her previous cars and theres been many! have been simple button press jobs to reset the indicator.
I like the idea of vcds but it seems you need a laptop on windows to run it and as my home computer is a mac, I think its one of them things I will buy when a problem develops otherwise I just know I will get it and never need it.

found this on the web somewhere, not sure what year it is talking about but it does mention long life service...

Push in the reset button for the trip recorder, hold it in, and turn ignition ON without starting engine.
The display should read either "SERVICE IN ????Miles" or "Service!" if it does not, repeat steps #1 and #2.
To reset, push and hold the odometer reset (control) button until you see "SERVICE IN --- MILES --DAYS" or "SERVICE!"..
    Note:
Perform step #4 before the "Service!" message disappears and changes to the usual message about holding the brake down while shifting out of Park.

Turn the ignition off. If done correctly, when the ignition is turned back on, the "Service!" reminder will not show.
    Alternate Procedure
With ignition off, push right button.
Turn ignition on, then pull the left button
    Note:
A flexible interval can only be calculated for the next service if the Service Interval Display is reset using VAS 5051 / 5052, VAG 1551/52 or the Vehicle Diagnosis Tester.

Reseting indicator via the instrument cluster will result in setting to a fixed service interval value of 1 year / 15,000 km (10,000 miles).

Do not reset the display between service intervals. Doing so will result in an incorrect display.

The service display information will remain intact even if the battery is disconnected.

If a priority 1 malfunction is detected (red symbol), you cannot display the distance remaining.
