Passat TDi's seem to be very troublesome, and expensive when they go wrong.
Is it worth all the hassle for another 10 MPG.

    VW & Audis are expensive when they go wrong. Fortunatly they don't go wrong that often. I've had a 1.8 A4 a 1.8turbo A6 and a 2.5 Passat V6.

If your not doing big miles I can't see the point in a diesel, the smoothness of the 18turbo in the A6 was something else ( I miss creeping up behind people in carparks ) Turbo blew on it though twice.

Needed a new engine in the A4 at 200,000 miles, ran till 220,000 when I sold it. Only other thing went wrong was a wheel bearing and a cat.

nearer you get to 25,000 miles a year the more you need a diesel, under that the extra you spend on the car might not be worth the noise/cold starts/gloves at petrol stations/the lag from the turbo.
