The dashboard symbol warning me of the failure of my brake lights has come on, but they are working, any ideas?

    Thanks.

Take them out and inspect/test them. One may be blackened and is not drawing enough current. It may also be a contact problem. Regards Peter

Just found the time to check them, they are both ok.

    Still puzzled.

Have a look at this thread. It might help. I had a brake light bulb warning that I couldn't get to the bottom of until I found out that the light control relay was dislodged.

    By me.

I'm not suggesting that your relay has come loose, but given what happened to mine, I wonder if a failed relay would give the same symptoms.

Relay 393 is behind the panel below and to the right of the steering wheel - just above where your right knee would be.

Had this problem last year and replaced both bulbs - no change.

    Happened after one bulb blew.

Messed around with different bulbs and for whatever reason a different brand didn't cause a problem, left them in and haven't had a problem since.

Don't understand why, but you may need to try different bulbs.

Ahhhh what a dimwit, it has just dawned on me that there are THREE brake lights.

Sure enough, the central is not functioning properly, just flashing occasionally.

It is a 2005 C5 Avant, is this a complete unit or just a bulb to change?

Complete unit. About fifty quid. It might be prudent to order two of the little square translucent red plastic screw covers as well. They're a few pence each.
