    Hello Everyone!

I am sincerely hoping you can help me! Recently I noticed that my GTD was not getting up to operating temperature. When I am driving around town the Oil Temperature may get up to around 80°C but as soon as I hit the open road it will drop back down to between 60-65°C.

I took it to a garage and they insisted it was the Thermostat (sounds logical right?) so they kept my car for 2 days and £360 later, I had my car back with a brand new thermostat. However, the problem has not gone away!

I am taking the car back to the garage in 2 days, but I want to have a good idea of possible causes (and maybe even confirm if easy to do so) before I go back.

Can anyone please let me know if they have seen this before? Or what it could likely be?

Before this started it used to consistently run between 90-100°C in all weather and temps.

    I'd appreciate any help! Thanks!

    In case you need it - it's a 2012 2.0 TDI 170ps GTD. No chip/remap.

£360 , was it gold plated?

The radiator fan on these have a module on the big fan if these go wrong the fan will either be constantly on or intermittently.

Thanks for your reply! I thought it was quite expensive, I had done my research before and everyone said it was a cheap fix. However, I did go see my car in the shop and it was fully stripped down. The mechanic said it was particularly hard to reach in my model. The majority of that price was labour. I was happy to pay it until I realised it hadn't even fixed the problem!!

What would it cost to get the radiator fan module fixed?

Sounds like he made a mountain out of a molehill fitting that,
It's only behind the alternator I have replaced them in 30mins without even removing the alternator (even with the hard to get to bottom bolt) and just over an hour with the belt and alternator off.

The fan will need testing first before replacing it, also make sure they actually bleed the system correctly.

The new fan if it is needed will cost roughly 350, but a thorough diagnoses will be needed before replacing any parts.

On a TDI in winter seeing an oil temp like that is perfectly normal but will largely depend on your driving style.

I have an older TDI and the oil temp can stay very low if bimbling along with the water thermostat not opening at all.

65c does seem low to me I would rather it run at 95c so the oil does its job better.

The other thing is are you using the correct oil spec? The additives in the oil help get the correct temps for the engine.

A quick check on my vw data shows the ideal temp should be 80c,
    Perhaps see how things go.

Don't forget the temp sensor could actually be reading incorrectly too

    Anyway best of luck

I would hang fire on going back to that garage if that's what they charge, mind you maybe its investigate work ......................................

I would wait for warmer weather and see if the oil temp actually runs at 80

A cold snap for a few more days is coming in

    Just wait is my advice

If you didn't have an oil temp gauge would you have known there was an issue?
Oil rarely gets up to temp especially this time of year. I had a 220hp normally aspirated track car which with normal driving would hang about the 65*C mark (oil).
