I've not had this problem yet as I didn't need to go anywhere in the snow last week but it got me thinking. In other "tiptronic" type cars I have had I have been able to select 2nd gear for pulling away in slippery conditions. Other, older, slush box autos used to have a Winter button which effectively did the same thing and in manual cars, pulling away in 2nd with little or no throttle was the order of the day to keep moving when things got slippery.

How the hell do you do it in these Audi's? they wont let you shift into 2nd before you are rolling meaning you could be sat there spinning your wheels when other cars have pulled away.

The only thing I can think of is to change the car setting to "Economy" which appears to steal half the power you have available.

    any thoughts?

I read somewhere that when stationary if you shift between neutral and drive a few times it eventually selects 2nd, although I think that was on a TT forum rather than A6, but relates to the s-tronic box. I've not tried in the A6 yet so not sure if it works...

I have an 8 speed auto A6 Allroad on 20" wheels with MPSS tyres and it behaved fine in the snow last week, no need to intervene just used light throttle and let the car do the rest.

No need for this if you have quattro... "slippery" has a decade difference meaning for Torsen

But what do you do in the like of my car, a FWD Multitronic?

My old V6 omega had a winter button which helped but the A6 doesn't have anything like that, as said above do you put it in eco mode and let traction control try sort things out?

I remember asking my dealer about this. Audi does not have either a wintermode or a manual override, ie one car start in 2nd or 3rd gear like in so many other cars. Since having the A6 through a few winters with snow and ice (with winter tyres obviously) not even once have I had the need......

In my old cars I always switched traction control OFF as you need the wheels to 'slip' in order to dig through the snow and gain traction

once on the move i would renable it

just be gentle with the throttle and you should be ok. The other solution is to fit winter tyres. I had a set for my A3 (FWDj and I was pretty much unstoppable even in snow over 1 foot thick

Simply just be gentle with the accelerator and drive to the road conditions.

Also if you have "sticky" snow make sure it doesn't clog up on the inner front arches as it can make for horrible noises when you have to turn and use a lot of steering lock.

Yep I had 4 Omega's all Auto and all with the winter button also with it being rear wheel drive some good weight in the boot would help keep things under control most of the time.
