I have similar symptons on my 1997 tdi 110. Between the front and rear passenger door under the floor pan there is a small metal box with pipes like you would find in the heater system going in one side and another pipe coming out the other end that vents on to the floor, this gets very hot when this fan noise occurs, as I know to my cost having burnt the ends of my fingers. Can somebody please tell me anything about this part

Err, it looks like a heater system because that's what it is. The extra blower in the rear of the car has an additonal heater matrix and collant supply/return from the front of the car.

I'm not too sure if this setup has a diesel burner built in. like the Touran now has. My old Alhambra had the same arrangement and what looked the same burner exhaust but it didn't get the car warm quickly like my Touran now does.

The burner on the Touran is under the bonnet but still makes quite a loud fan noise, a little like those industrial gas powered space heaters you can get.

Our 115PD Alhambra is giving off a little smoke from this unit- is this normal?! Mostly on short journeys but it's freaking my wife out when she drives it.....

    (Sorry to jump in!)

I know this is a fault that can appear on Tourans, where the burner is faulty huge clouds of white smoke issue from this heater. I've only seen smoke from mine once - when the car was new on the first cold day. I would get your's checked as diesel should burn 'clean' i.e. without smoke.
