Well then. They drained the oil from the car and it was quote "alot of metal" in the oil according to the mechanic. So he recommended a new engine, there is too much damage.

But the engine turns by hand, barely and has compression.

The mechanic dont think the car will last with just a oil pump switch. He said that you will have to buy a new turbo, because that is shot and you will get loads of fault codes because of this.

It seems like there is alot of internal damage, and honestly i think its done.

The worst part is that the 170hp engine is hard to find. Im from Norway, and there is currently none in my contry at the moment. I have found one in Sweden, but they are asking 32500 NOK for it. ( that is 4000 USD or 3200 GBP). + fitting of the engine, new oil / filter, coolant etc

Was your car ever subject to a recall. ? I remember there was on some to change the balancer shaft cog. I vaguely remember doing some when I worked at Volkswagen back in 2007 to 2010.

That i don't know. The car was imported before i had it, so what was done on this car in terms of recall I have no clue.
Regardless, my friend wants to tear down my engine because he had similar problems before. So i will update you when he has looked at it.

    Yes, get a second opinion.

For £4,000 you can find higher mileage complete saloons over here. But right hand drive. And you'll have to have the oil pump update done for TDi

Or get my SEL Estate petrol for £6,000... (see my sig)

Keep us updated with your progress?

It would probably be easier to just get a second passat if the engine is done. I think i can import a 140hp passat with some damage for less than 4000 USD. And if i go with a complete car with 140hp, i got all i need to put it into my car.

Well, we have to see what is going on inside the engine first. My mechanic friend will take the engine apart to the point were he can assess the damage or lack their of.

This won't happen the next few days, so over christmas I will update this thread.

Thanks for all the help so far guys! Happy Christmas!

Don't understand people that have a disaster with one model of car then go out a buy exactly the same again

Dump TDi altogether. They're filthy, dirty, smelly, polluting, carcinogenic generators of an engine. Especially in Norge, I thought you'd be more advanced in your thinking than this?

Petrols aren't perfect, but they're certainly better -- and won't give you the oil pump failure wallet ache

The true picture is more cloudy as Petrol engines even with a catalyst emit far higher CO2 and Hydrocarbons than diesels but as we now know far less particulates and around a third less Nitrogen Oxides. Particulate emissions regulation is not yet where it should be hence we still have belching black smoke diesels out there but CO2, HC and NOx all are.

The best solution Diesel or Petrol? Neither as both either contribute to health (particulates and NOx) or to Global Warming and damage to the Ozone layer (CO2). The real answer is the improvement of fuels to eliminate or nullify the byproducts and the development of better, non restrictive, efficient treatment of gases on all cars by the engineering genii.

Am preparing for the mental wrench of not having a Passat that fits me like a well worn slipper outside.
And driving more miles in an XJ8 X308 nowadays. Being 4L am considering gas conversion @£1,600
which I can recoup over three to four years at 10,000 per year.

What's your feelings on pollutants LPG vs petrol?
