    Hi all,
newbie here to site but had car for a few years. Not working at the minute so have time to visit site. Car is 3 ltr A6 diesel 07. When key in ignition it turns straight to start ie no position (Aux position 1) to allow the glow plugs to heat up before cranking the engine. Could this be an ignition switch problem and if so any suggestion for a temp work around. I also have an intermittent drivers door lock that will not work off the remote that I for some reason suspect is connected as they both started about the same time.

Many thanks for any suggestions and I shall enjoy exploring your site.
    Best Rgds
    Steve

at door hinge, take off rubber covering wires leading from car into door. You are looking for broken wires or green gunge due to electric problem. If you have broken wires simply repair

possibly you need to scan the car to find out fault codes, either a friendly person in here with vcds or autel/ sealey vag505 owner and a few beers ??

Many thanks for your reply Niall. I shall have a look at the door electrics tomorrow when I have a bit more daylight guaranteed. Door still unlocks with the key so not desperate. Still researching the loss of position one on ignition lock. A few beers never go amiss Cheers again

    Steve, welcome to the forum!

So does the car run OK? I assume not if

Have you had it scanned with VCDS

So I'll assume that if you don't have position 1 then you've got no steering lock?

    This is a good read:

Sounds like you need a new E415 module. There are seven different versions but they are all £235.37 from Audi

Thanks for the welcome and response MarkTM. Car is runningand starting fine. Doesn’t get used a lot recently as I’m not working atpresent.
By not stopping at position one where all the check lightswould come on and the glow plugs heat up the car is going straight into startmode i.e the engine is cranking over for about 10 seconds while the plugs heatup before igniting. This will obviously run the battery down fairly soonwithout any long runs in between.
Just been out and checked and the steering is locked. Oneturn and its off and the engine running if that makes any sense. I will have aread up on the link you supplied.
Hav’nt had any scans done on it at present.
Thanks again for you response much appreciated.
Just read your article and as far as I can remember , whenit was working there is only the first position then the ignition position onthis car first being a sort of acc position although don’t think the radio iswired through Acc in this Audi

Thanks Crasher, am I right in assuming an E415 module would be the steering lock switch. I think things will have to go on hold a bit at that price though. Thanks for the interest and response. Much Appreciated

Morning all. Just a quick update for now and to say thanks again for all your help. I sprayed the ignition lock and key several times with car lube and gave it a good rattle. Hey presto it looks like something has loosed up and sprung back into place. I can now step through the Acc position let the plugs heat up then start the ignition. Lets see how long that lasts. As an added bonus all the doors unlocked via the remote this morning. I am thinking perhaps the cold weather wasn't helping. But anyway success for now. Thank you again.

There is an odd fact about that switch that I bet not many people realise. ANY suitable profile key will turn it, they are not key matched to the car.
