Hi Folks, I have a '99 A4 1.8T quattro sport (B5 I think ), fitted with the original set of 17inch alloys but over the years they have deteriorated with the silver paint blistering and flaking off in places. The centre trim has also suffered (see picture attached, not the worst example). The wheels are not that common so I'd like to keep them, but I think the corrosion means the tires don't always make a good seal and so deflate very slowly.
Anyone got any recommendations about what can be done to repair the damage, replace the trim? And how much it might cost?
    Cheers, JB

Hi Folks, been out of the country for a while so haven't been able to follow up on this... Thanks to all who took the time to look over the post, I appreciate its not the most interesting of topics!!
Anyway, I've done a bit of searching on the interweb and it looks like getting the alloys back up to their shiny best will be a combination of:
    - getting part numbers from a VAG dealer
    - maybe a purchase or two on ebay
    - a trip to a specialist shop for some acid cleaning and re-coating of the wheels.
I'll add some pics and more details once its been done, hopefully in the next few weeks...
    Rgds,
    J

Bouts are you? I know a guy off junc39 M1 Who has just refurbed my 2 piece alloys off my subaru £60 each and an excellent job done. Weld/diamond cut rim/repaint. Get in touch if this is any use to you

I'm down surrey so that's a bit far to go, but thanks anyway
The price comparison is useful too. Think I've found a place in Guildford that will do it for around 55+VAT per wheel - diamond cut rim/repaint (baked in an oven apparently) mine are one piece only so no welding needed. Not got the name to hand, but if I use them I'll post more details.
One problem at the moment is what do with a car with no wheels for the few days when the work's being done!?!?! Some borrowed axel stands might be the answer...

Hi jb1999, if you have the name of the company in Guildford that you mentioned, I'd be grateful if you could post it or pm me. Thanks.

    Evening All,
So... its been a while, many things took priority (namely preparations for arrival of sprog #1 ) but I finally got this done. Ended up going to a place in Byfleet, Surrey - handy location as I work a few stops up on the train. I took the motor along to get some advice and it turns out the previous owner had done a cheap and cheerful paint repair over a polished section that has suffered some serious scuffing. Corrosion has taken hold and so the paint bubbled up, whcih you can just about see on the photo above - similar to painting over a damp wall - it hides the problem, but doesn't solve it. The wheels had to be paint-stripped back to the bone (acid dip I think) and then cut, sealed, painted, baked and finally polished.

Look totally good as new now, along with new centre caps, and the seal with the tire means they don't deflate slowly any more. The only sting was the price: 560quid included balancing (+ the caps from Audi @ ten quid each). Am telling myself it was worth it baring in mind the amount of work (took about 2.5 days), the quality of the finished product (and no doubt an element of Surrey tax!) And that Audi quoted close to 400 quid for each replacement wheel!

    Rgds,

    J
